    An employee in this position will proceed on foot or in a vehicle from premise to premise locating water meters; uncovers meters and enters in handheld computer; observes meters and notes breakage or faulty operation; reports to appropriate personnel the need for adjustment or repairs; cooperates with immediate supervisor in discontinuing and renewing services by cutting on or cutting off meters, or removing and replacing meters as indicated by the circumstances; assists in meter repairs as required; finds and raises meter boxes and meters as required. Other duties as assigned. Must possess the ability to drive a light truck; ability to deal courteously with the public; ability to walk moderate distances and work under varying conditions; ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees; ability to perform manual tasks at times under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to learn and remember location of meters; ability to accurately read meters; and ability to recognize faulty meters.

    Must possess a valid Class "C" driver's license from NC. Must possess a high school diploma or GED. Minimum age of 18. Prefer applicant who has thorough knowledge of the layout of city streets.

    Major Duties

    Records water meter readings on an assigned route; records data.

    Inspects meters for signs of tampering, vandalism, and theft of utility services.

    Clears overgrown vegetation, obstacles, and hazards from meters; reports meters blocked by structures such as porches or decks to the supervisor.

    Connects and disconnects customer services.

    Sets up new accounts for meter reading routes.

    Responds to customer complaints; resolves problems or notifies supervisor.

    Rereads meters as necessary to get accurate data or to identify problems such as water leaks.

    Washes and maintains service truck.

    Performs service work when needed.

    May be assigned supervisory duties in the absence of supervisor.

    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    After-hours work is required as necessary during emergencies, inclement weather and other times as necessary.


    Knowledge and Qualifications

    Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

    Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

    Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

    Knowledge of department policies and procedures pertaining to the reading of water meters.

    Knowledge of the mechanical functions of water meters.

    Knowledge of the locations of city streets and meters.
    Knowledge of utility service areas.

    Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations.

    Skill in the use of meter-testing equipment.

    Skill in the use of various meter-reading equipment and hand tools.

    Skill in operating a motor vehicle.

    Skill in water distribution and collection system maintenance and repair.

    Skill in oral and written communication.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee in this position to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently/repeatedly required to stand; walk; use hands and exert forces needed to handle various types and sizes of tools, equipment and objects; reach with hands and arms and perform elevated work for periods of time; climb ladders and balance; climb into vehicles and equipment; stoop; kneel; half-kneel; squat; crouch; or crawl; and talk; or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift, push, pull and/or move more than 100 pounds. An employee in this position will have successfully passed a "Functional Prework Screen" administered by a professional and impartial third party specialist.

    SAFETY SENSITIVE: This position has been identified as safety-sensitive. The employee in this position will be part of a random drug testing pool. The methodology for choosing the random test subjects is handled by an outside, impartial, third party vendor.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
