The Maintenance & Stormwater Management Division is seeking a skilled professional with a knack of diagnosing and fixing small engines. From lawnmowers to snowblowers your expertise will keep equipment running efficiently.
The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks an Equipment Repairer to assist with site SWPP inspections, troubleshooting, routine maintenance and repair, and prepare proper fuel mixtures for a wide variety of small engine equipment such as snow blowers, lawnmowers, power tampers, chain saws, brush cutters, concrete mixers, pumps, and augers. Thorough preventative maintenance and as needed repairs on salt spreaders and snow-related equipment. Maintains records of all equipment repaired, parts inventory, maintenance schedules, and fuel mixture ratios. Orders parts as needed. May supervise and instruct trade helpers. Drives a truck to and from job sites for emergency repairs and snow removal when necessary. This position will support the Maintenance Operations (MOPS) field staff with field assignments on an as-needed basis.

Position works in the DPWES Stormwater Maintenance and Operations Unit located at 10635 West Drive, Fairfax, Virginia.
Note: Emergency overtime and unscheduled overtime is a requirement for this position. The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed.
- A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired into this Equipment Repairer position. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade, and completion of an acceptable apprentice program in maintenance and repair work, and one year of successful journey-level experience in related maintenance and repair work.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:- Valid driver's license
- Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B" within 6 months of hire
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:- Experience with small engine repair.
- Experience with Asset Management software.
- Experience with inventory management.
- Experience maintaining service logs.
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt and personal fall arrest harness. With or without reasonable accommodation, performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes (with assistance, includes removal and replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 pounds). All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include exercise.
BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
