Fire Inspector conducts inspections of new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with fire and safety codes. Prepares reports and issues violation documents. Being a Fire Inspector documents and defines actions needed to resolve non-compliance situations. Conducts fire investigations. Additionally, Fire Inspector has extensive knowledge of codes, ordinances, construction materials, and alarm systems. Typically requires an associate degree in fire science or equivalent. Has completed fire inspection training and may require the Certified Fire Inspector I (CFI) credential and applicable State License. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Fire Inspector is capable of working on complex problems and exceptions without direct supervision. Has a wide and comprehensive understanding of both general and specific aspects of the job. As a full-time, non-exempt status employee of the City of Hanahan, the Fire Inspector serves as a member of the administrative staff to the Fire Chief and his/ her command staff. This position requires an individual to perform the work outlined below in the highest legal, moral and ethical standards of this department and the City of Hanahan. The position serves as the Fire Marshal for the City of Hanahan and as such directs community risk reduction measures, fire investigations and code compliance inspections within the city or elsewhere at the direction of the Fire Chief.
The Fire Marshal is the principal official responsible for compliance with state and local codes governing life safety in buildings within the City of Hanahan. The Fire Marshal also works as the department’s Community Risk Reduction Officer and is expected to interface with staff, citizens, and visitors to promote the mission for a fire safe community.
The essential functions are listed below, management may assign additional functions as necessary:
Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in fire service or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must complete required coursework and maintain Interior Structural Firefighter and other certifications as issued by the S.C. Fire Academy and obtain IFSAC Firefighter II (FFII) certification.
Starting salary range: $44,698.00 to $60,043.33 DOQ & DOE. The City of Hanahan offers a competitive benefit package including health insurance and participation in the State Retirement plan (PEBA.)
