    Job Description:

    The University at Albany is seeking two knowledgeable and skilled Accessibility Counselors. The counselors work with the Assistant Dean for Disability Access and Inclusion Student Services (DAISS) and the DAISS team to provide direct services to students with disabilities. This role ensures that eligible students receive appropriate accommodation and supportive services in compliance with federal regulations. The counselors participate in DAISS registration with accommodation assessment, one-on-one coaching, event/program facilitation, collaborating with colleagues and other departments to coordinate resources, assisting with managing the DAISS Testing Center, Testing Center scheduling and
    proctoring, and supervising an MSW intern.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Manage the DAISS and DAISS Testing email inboxes regarding accommodations, emotional support animals (ESAs), documentation, and other communications to current students.
    • Respond to phone inquiries from students and their support network.
    • Assist the Operations Specialist with proctoring exams in/managing the Testing Center as needed.
    • Manage a caseload of students representing a wide range of disabilities and functional limitations and determine appropriate student accommodations based on an understanding of professional evaluations.
    • Register and orient students to DAISS programs and services.
    • Create student files in the Accommodate Software.
    • Meet with students to review the identified educational barriers and determine their individual support needs.
    • Refer students to academic support services and other available campus resources.
    • Create and send accommodation to students, faculty, and necessary parties.
    • Provides support to students registered with DAISS toward enhancing their academic experience.
    • Provides one-to-one Executive Functioning Skills and Academic Coaching support.
    • Supervise a DAISS MSW Intern(s) who assists in direct services activities.
    • Assists with planning and coordinating events with the DAISS team, such as the Recipe for Success High School Transition Conference, Annual Awards Reception, and other office-sponsored events.
    • Participate in Division/office assessment activities and training.
    • The incumbent dedicates themself to upholding policies aligning with institutional, divisional, and departmental diversity, equity, and inclusion perspectives.
    • The incumbent demonstrates commitment and sensitivity to how Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) impact attaining institutional, divisional, and departmental goals and objectives.
    • The incumbent shows evidence of strategic thinking about DEI issues.
    • The incumbent exhibits knowledge/understanding of strategies, skills, and best practices for establishing an inclusive community.
    • The incumbent exhibits demonstrated ability and willingness to advocate for DEI education and initiatives.

     


    Requirements:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
    • Experience with the Microsoft suite of programs and ability to adapt to new software and technology.
    • Two years working at an institution of higher education or an equivalent experience.
    • Experience supervising undergraduate and graduate students - recruiting, hiring, training, and providing guidance or, where appropriate, providing developmental review.
    • Demonstrated substantive experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
    • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community
    • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion and belonging relative to their role

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Demonstrated knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
    • Bachelor's degree in a field related to education, psychology, or social services.
    • Computer and other technology skills, particularly software and applications that assist individuals with disabilities.
    • Experience working in higher education.
