Being a Golf Superintendent - Assistant ensures adherence to golf course maintenance budget and capital plans. May serve in the Superintendent's capacity during absence. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members.     JOB DUTIES

    Works under the general supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent.

    Supervises golf course maintenance workers and other seasonal employees as required and assigned.

    Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

    Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

    Performs a variety of supervisory and skilled tasks in the operation and maintenance of golf course grounds.

    Manages and supervises assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources.

    Plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments.

    Trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed.

    Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

    Issues written and oral instructions; assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.

    Lays out daily work schedules and assigns tasks to appropriate individuals, crews or combination of crews, and coordinates the completion of the same.

    In the absence of the Golf Course Superintendent, coordinates maintenance and construction activities to assure continual smooth operation of the golf course.

    Must be able to respond to a callout after hours to the golf course within 30 minutes of the call.

    Develops golf course maintenance and operating procedures and methods within limits of departmental policies and procedures.

    Provides necessary supervision, direction, and assistance to crews at work sites. Enforces policies, regulations, and safety and health standards.

    Determines, calculates and secures the appropriate materials and supplies for a specific project.

    Assists in projecting needs for equipment, materials and supplies. Assists in the preparation of specifications, estimates, and bids for machinery, equipment, and contractor services.

    Assures that tools and equipment are properly maintained and kept in proper working condition.

    Oversees and assists in the mowing and maintenance of golf course fairways, rough, greens, tee area and other open space areas; changing cups; sandproing the bunkers; oversees and assists in the maintenance of sprinkler systems and the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.

    Oversees the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of the golf course.

    Responsible for inspecting player owned carts.

    Inspects and oversees maintenance and cleaning of drinking fountains and rest rooms and reports necessary plumbing repairs to maintenance.

    Works with Golf Course Superintendent to inform the public when maintenance will top dress and any out of bounds areas or special work that may be performed on a daily basis.

    Sets up and takes down equipment for various programs and tournaments, prepares facilities for program use.

    Opens and closes locks and unlocks facilities as needed.

    Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

    NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    Assists in the development and enforcement of policies, rules and regulations for the golf course.

    Maintains and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.

    Answers golfers' questions on rules, out of bounds, etc.; and takes measures to expedite play such as permitting faster players to play through slower players. Picks up range balls as needed.

    May serve on various employee committees, as required and assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

    Associates degree or Bachelor degree in Agronomy, Turf Grass Management, or Golf Course Management and two years of golf course maintenance experience OR any combination of education and experience sufficient to perform duties of position.

    One-year supervisory experience strongly desired.

    New Mexico Pesticide Applicators license or ability to obtain such within 90 days of employment.

    Valid Commercial Driver's License with acceptable driving record for the past three years or ability to obtain such within 90 days of employment.

    Working knowledge of personal computers and software packages for word processing and spread sheeting.

    Extensive knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in golf course grounds maintenance.

    Extensive knowledge of landscaping to improve golf course design and to recognize the need for proper pruning, planting, spraying and related care.

    Extensive knowledge of soils and turf.

    Extensive knowledge of fertilizers and chemicals used in golf course maintenance.

    Working knowledge of mathematical skills in order to calibrate spray equipment and spreaders.

    Working knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs.

    Working knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.

    Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.

    Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

    Ability to understand, follows, and transmits written and oral instructions.

    Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

    Ability to meet deadlines.

    Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

    Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

    Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.

    Extensive background checks required.

    This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program.

    Front-end loader/tractor, backhoe, dump truck, skid loader, Sand Pro, Cushman Truckster, Cushman Top dresser, Cushman Sprayer, fertilizer hopper, seeder, sod cutter, string trimmers, edger's, electric motors, pumps, aerifier, mowers, fork lift, miscellaneous hand and power tools, personal computer and applicable software packages, fax and copy machines, motor vehicle, telephone, mobile radio, calculator, and golf cart.
