Golf Superintendent is responsible for overall maintenance and care of the golf course, including turf/grass management, irrigation, and chemical applications (e.g., fertilizer, pesticides) to ensure quality playing conditions. Oversees continued development of golf course during golf season to improve playing conditions and maintenance of course during off-season. Being a Golf Superintendent manage purchasing, replenishment, and inventory of all materials, supplies, and equipment used to maintain golf course. Liaises with the Head Golf Professional on any issues related to golf course operations and maintenance. Additionally, Golf Superintendent typically requires a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Typically reports to a golf course general manager. The Golf Superintendent manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Golf Superintendent typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     JOB DUTIES

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    Performs a variety of supervisory and skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of golf course buildings and grounds.

    Works under the general supervision of the Golf Course Manager.

    Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

    Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

    Supervises the Assistant Superintendent, maintenance workers, mechanics, and part-time or temporary employees, as required.

    Manages and supervises assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources.

    Plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments.

    Trains, motivates, and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed.

    Coordinate with Pro Shop staff to coordinate tournaments, special requests and banquets.

    Communicates official plans, policies, and procedures to staff in assigned area of responsibility.

    Assures that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget; performs cost control activities; monitors revenues and expenditures in assigned area to assure sound fiscal control; prepares annual budget requests; assures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities, and time.

    Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites work flow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

    Issues written and oral instructions; assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.

    Maintains harmony among workers and resolves grievances.

    Performs or assists subordinates in performing duties; adjusts errors and complaints.

    Prepares a variety of studies, reports, and related information for decision-making purposes.

    Lays out daily work schedules and assigns tasks to appropriate individuals, crews or combination of crews, and coordinates the completion of the same.

    Coordinates maintenance and construction activities with golf course manager to assure continual smooth operation of the golf course.

    Develops and maintains a golf course maintenance management system. Develops golf course maintenance and operating procedures and methods within limits of departmental policies and procedures.

    Provides necessary supervision, direction, and assistance to crews at work sites. Enforces policies, regulations, and safety and health standards.

    Determines, calculates, and secures the appropriate materials and supplies for a specific project.

    Inspects golf course maintenance and improvement services provided by contractors or vendors for compliance with performance standards.

    Improves work methods to accomplish assigned work.

    Assists in projecting needs for equipment, materials, and supplies. Assists in the preparation of specifications, estimates, and bids for machinery, equipment, and contractor services.

    Assures that tools and equipment are properly maintained and kept in proper working condition.

    Assigns, supervises, and evaluates Assistant Superintendent, maintenance workers, mechanics, and part-time or temporary employees.

    Prepares and maintains daily, monthly, and annual reports and records, as assigned.

    Provides information within scope of knowledge and position.

    Oversees and assists in the mowing and maintenance of golf course fairways, rough, greens, tee area, and other open space areas; oversees and assists in the maintenance of sprinkler systems and the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.

    Oversees the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of the golf course.

    Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

    NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

    May be required to maintain equipment in the absence of the mechanic.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

    Bachelor's degree in Agronomy or Turf Grass Management and five years of golf course maintenance experience or any combination of education and experience sufficient to perform duties of position.

    New Mexico Pesticide Applicators License, or ability to obtain such within 60 days of employment.

    Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record for the past three years. CDL preferred not required.

    Journeyman Irrigation License is preferred.

    Certified Golf Course Superintendent preferred, or ability to obtain certification.

    Extensive knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in golf course grounds maintenance.

    Extensive knowledge of landscaping to improve golf course design and to recognize the need for proper pruning, planting, spraying, and related care.

    Extensive knowledge of soils and turf.

    Extensive knowledge of fertilizers and chemicals used in golf course maintenance.

    Working knowledge of mathematical skills in order to calibrate spray equipment and spreaders.

    Working knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs.

    Working knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.

    Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.

    Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.

    Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

    Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

    Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.

    Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

    Extensive background checks required.

    This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program.
