Government Affairs Director implements strategic plans and oversees engagement objectives to develop and maintain productive relations with all levels of government authorities that will support and enhance the businesses' goals. Manages teams that build relationships and liaise with government entities(federal, state, provincial, or local) that regulate or influence business activities. Being a Government Affairs Director performs ongoing monitoring and analysis of proposed legislation, emerging issues, and trends to determine the potential impact on the organization. Collaborates with industry groups and organizations with complementary objectives to achieve objectives. Additionally, Government Affairs Director creates communication vehicles and delivers messaging to inform and support business leaders. Requires a bachelor's degree in public policy, public administration, business or equivalent. Typically reports to a director. The Government Affairs Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Government Affairs Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.     Status: Regular, Full-time, Exempt

    Location: Anchorage, AK

     

    JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Government Affairs will be responsible for developing short- and long-term legislative strategy to protect The Aleut Corporation (Aleut) business interests, public and private partnerships and our shareholders. This cross-functional position will collaborate with the Communications Department for management of public messaging and with the Legal and Compliance Department for analysis of laws and proposed laws and work closely with Vice President of Regional Affairs to build relationships with local, state, and federal government and private partners.

     

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Embrace the values of Aleut including honesty, integrity, accountability, respect, and perseverance. 

    • Represent the organization's interests by communicating its stance on legislative and regulatory matters.

    • Study and analyze legislative issues of importance to Aleut, including but not limited to federal funding for environmental cleanup efforts, fisheries legislation, and other similar matters. 

    • Develop and implement advocacy strategies to influence government decision-making.

    • Recommend proactive responses and mitigation strategies.

    • Lead and coordinate lobbying efforts, including preparation of briefing materials and testimony for legislative hearings.

    • Engage in outreach to legislators and their staff to educate them about Aleut's priorities and positions.

    • Organize and participate in meetings, conferences, and advocacy events as requested.

    • Assist in the development of government affairs strategies, goals, and objectives.

    • Work with the Communications Department to manage public messaging and media relations related to government affairs, and with the Legal and Compliance Department to align government affairs efforts with organizational objectives.

    • Assist senior management and leadership with strategic planning for known and potential regulatory activities related to the business, industries, region and our shareholders.

    • Build and maintain professional relationships with members of federal, state, and local government entities and agencies.

    • Join trade associations and industry committees and seek leadership roles.

    • Collaborate with industry advocates to build areas of common interest.

    • Prepare testimony for senior leadership before government committees in support of the organization, region and/or shareholders, and/or provide such testimony as requested.

    • Introduce legislative and public policy changes that will support company operations and/or needs of our community partners.

    • Approximately 20-30% travel time required.

    • Perform other duties as required.

    • Works well under pressure and can perform multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions; effective time management skills, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to establish and maintain priorities and meet deadlines.

    • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff, affiliated-company employees as well as outside business associates; exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others.

    • Strong leadership, team management, internal/external partner engagement, networking and consultant management capabilities.

    • Ability to research and organize information with particular attention to accuracy and detail.

    • Proficient using Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and industry-standard computer software and databases.

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including thorough knowledge of proper grammar, advanced vocabulary, spelling, editing and proofreading skills.

    • Superior organizational, follow-up and detail-oriented skills.

    • Excellent customer service skills.

    • Knowledge of ANCSA corporations and the businesses and activities of Aleut, its subsidiaries and its designated Tribal organizations and affiliated non-profit organizations.

    • High degree of sensitivity regarding confidential information.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. Bachelor of Business Administration or other related degree; OR an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

    2. Five (5) years work experience in a related position to include three (3) years managing a large team in a similar environment.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Working in Alaska Native Corporations
