    Project Cataloguer

    Temporary Assignment (3 years)

    We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Project Cataloguer to join our Library team for a temporary assignment of 3 years. The successful candidate will be responsible for cataloguing and organizing a large collection of materials related to a specific project.

    JOB PURPOSE:
    The Project Cataloging Associate works to ensure accurate description of library resources to improve discovery and support the mission of the library and archives. The person in the position catalogs and classifies a variety of materials in many different languages including: monographs, special collections, serials, electronic or digital resources, archival sources, all according to current library standards.
    KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Original and Copy cataloging: Creates original cataloging records and imports accurate records to improve the discovery of library materials.
      • Corrects and updates records as part of data enhancement projects to ensures that records align with institutional standards and professional best practices, including RDA, MARC21, OCLC, and LCSH. Works within the LSP Exlibris Alma, as well as Connexion, OCLC and may support metadata creation for other platforms such as Internet Archive and Digital Scriptorium.
      • Cataloging duties include bibliographic pre-order search and verification, creating original records as required, copy cataloging, retrospective bibliographic conversion, and editing records such as serials records.
      • Metadata work may involve mapping metadata between schema, adapting metadata for contribution to specific discovery platforms or research interfaces and utilizing metadata to improve discoverability.
    • Collection Analysis: Supports large initiatives including retrospective reclassification of collections to support collection analysis, maintenance and preservation.
    • Other – Supports other library and archives staff cataloging and metadata needs and performs other duties as assigned or requested for the general support of the library and museum; which may including providing support on the reference desk and special projects as assigned.
    • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited institution in library science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • 3 – 5 years of experience working in library reference and cataloging.
    • Experience with cataloging tools and systems such as OCLC’s Connexion, ExLibris’ Library Services Platform (LSP) Alma, and MarcEdit.
    • Knowledge of cataloging standards and best practices such as MARC21, RDA, ULAN, ATT, LCSH, LCNAF, and other controlled vocabularies.
    • Experience working in library systems and knowledge of typical cataloging workflow; including collaborative problem-solving, implementing protocols and maintaining awareness of professional best practices.
    • Preferred working knowledge of the library’s LSP – Ex Libris Alma, Microsoft Office, and ability to learn and integrate new software into workflows as needed.
    • Preferred knowledge of art history and experience cataloging art and history materials primarily in English but also in other European languages.

    Working Conditions
    While performing the duties of this job, this position is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs and ladders, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk or hear, and maneuver in a compressed stacks environment. This position must routinely lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and distance vision.
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently move hands and fingers repetitively while typing or writing. Occasionally be required to sit at a desk for extended periods.
    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to quiet.
    Perform with frequent interruptions and/or distractions. Perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload.


    Hours/Travel Expectations
    Monday to Friday workweek, 35 hours per week typically achieve between the hours of 9 AM and 5 PM. May occasionally work extended hours or after office hours as needed.
