Being a Head Nurse - Obstetrics maintains pre-set inventory standards for solutions, supplies, medicines and equipment, and keeps track of narcotics. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Additionally, Head Nurse - Obstetrics requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse - Obstetrics manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Essential Functions:
Provides breastfeeding education and support to parents of infants
Acts as a consultant to parents on post-partum unit
Conducts follow up with parents as needed
Participates in the education of nursing staff as it relates to breastfeeding
Develops policies and standards of care based upon evidenced base practice and current research
Reviews and maintains current all educational materials distributed to parents regarding breastfeeding
Participates in consortium and community related breastfeeding activities,
Maintains regulatory compliance as appropriate
Maintains logs and prepares monthly reports as requested
Actively participates in patient satisfaction initiatives related to breast feeding
Assesses education needs of parents as it relates to breastfeeding
Collaborates with all members of the healthcare team to meet the needs of the family
Develops policies and standards of care based upon evidenced base practice and current research
Encourages unrestricted breastfeeding
Evaluates for signs of breastfeeding effectiveness
Identifies maternal and infant risk factors and contraindications that relate to breastfeeding
Participates in consortium and community related breastfeeding activities
Participates in the education of nursing staff as it relates to breastfeeding
Reviews and maintains current all educational materials distributed to parents regarding breastfeeding
Supports breastfeeding during the hospitalization and/or separation of the mother and infant
