CLASS TITLE: BUS MONITOR CODE: 7942
BASIC FUNCTION:
Assist school bus driver in maintaining discipline while bus is in operation; maintain proper records and documentation; assist student loading, unloading and seating arrangements as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
Employment will be conditional upon results of Criminal History Registry.
Requires current Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certification.
Health appraisal required upon employment.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Safe practices concerning school bus transportation; basic record-keeping techniques; health and safety regulations;
how to operate a fire extinguisher; how to use a seat belt cutter (to cut through a strap using seat belt cutters, make the cut at an angle); how to operate a communication device (such as a cell phone) to call for assistance.
ABILITY TO:
Maintain proper records and documentation.
Assist students loading and unloading and establishes seating arrangements as required,assigning a seat location for each child (702 KAR 5:080).
Understand and relate to children with special needs.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Lift students appropriately according to established guidelines.
Maintain current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures.
Practice health and safety regulations.
SAFETY PRACTICES/EDUCATION/COMMUNICATION:
Is knowledgeable about the installation/maintenance of each type of child restraint system on bus.
Safely and securely fastens each child into the restraint system according to recommended practice. (This includes, but is not limited to, making sure that the safety seat is tightly secured to the bus seat, that the harness straps are in the correct slots, that the retainer clips are correctly connected, that the safety seat harness straps are fitted properly on the child.)
Keeps all children seated at all times.
Places a child that is in a seat alone on the bus seat closer to the aisle
Prevents an unsecured passenger to ride in the seat behind a child being restrained in a safety vest or any other child safety restraint system. (Secure the passenger, or keep that seat unoccupied.)
Utilizes positive child guidance at all times.
Assists children with safety concepts using the "teachable moment" while child rides the bus to and from school.
Assists and participates in 3-4 vehicle evacuation drills during the school year.
Assists the bus driver with any emergency situations following all rules and regulations that pertain to school bus safety and child health, filling out accident/incident reports as appropriate.
Follows universal precautions with all children
Leaves seat to actively assist children during ride, and gets off bus to pick up and drop off child.
Teaches Head Start children to fasten, adjust, and unfasten seat belts on their own by the time they leave Head Start.
Visually observes the health of each child on the bus reporting any concerns to teachers.
Ensures that any behavioral issues do not compromise the safety of any child on the bus or the ability of the bus driver to safely operate the vehicle, reporting any behavior issues to child’s teacher.
Maintains an up-to-date roster of children assigned to bus route on the bus.
Collaborates with the bus driver to ensure that each child is delivered to the care of a responsible adult whose name is on authorized list and who has approved "bus plate."
Ensures that no child is ever left unattended while on the bus, following all procedures put in place to prevent a child being left behind.
Returns child to the school or designated site if no parent/guardian or authorized person is present to accept a child.
Never drops off a child to be allowed to go the rest of the way home alone.
Makes sure that children who must cross the street before boarding or after leaving the bus areescorted across the street by a parent or guardian or personally escorts child across street after waiting for signal from bus driver that it is safe to cross.
Performs a walkthrough of bus (looking for children and or items left behind) each time route is completed and before leaving bus.
Assists with paperwork flow between homes and sites.
Maintains complete confidentiality regarding any information about children and families.
Maintains positive communications with parents, drivers and site staff, relaying information to appropriate parties as needed.
Attends any trainings or meetings as required by Transportation Manager and Head Start staff.
Smiles and speaks to at each child using his or her name to set a positive tone for the child’s day.
Uses age appropriate communication skills with children on the bus.
Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.(All communications are potentially sensitive and are subject to Head Start’s policy on confidentiality.)
MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES:
Maintains regular attendance.
Performs other duties assigned by Head Start Administrators and/or Transportation Director.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL ABILITIES AND PROCESSES:
Able to visually assess the health and behaviors of children.
Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds, typically assisting children into seats, and the ability to carry or drag a child in an emergency situation out of the bus to a safe area.
Frequent bending at the neck, waist and knees and occasional squatting.
Daily sitting, about 85% or riding time.
Occasional climbing to enter and exit bus.
EDUCATION: Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, GED, Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a GED as required by Kentucky Law.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: None
JOB HAZARDS: Minimal risk of physical injury, minimal exposure to infectious disease could cause relatively minor illness.

SALARY RANGE: According to Paducah Independent School’s Salary Schedule
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Determined by each program year / continuous program grant.
