Health and Safety Supervisor supervises the identification and remediation of hazardous workplace conditions. Oversees the measurement and sampling of hazardous materials, and any removal of physical, biological and chemical hazards. Being a Health and Safety Supervisor investigates, analyzes, and reports on any accidents or unsafe events and suggests remedial and preventative actions. Develops a safety conscious culture by providing workforce education on first aid, emergency/safety procedures and regulations. Additionally, Health and Safety Supervisor ensures all necessary records are maintained and are in compliance with all applicable federal and state health and safety regulations. Participates in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspections, providing inspectors with appropriate documents and identifying safety measures. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a Manager. The Health and Safety Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/ production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Health and Safety Supervisor typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     YOUR ROLE

    Responsible for the implementation and administration of group compliance with all applicable state and federal agencies, including but not limited to the DOT and OSHA regulations to provide a safe and healthy environment for employees and the public.


    WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?

    • Supervise and train safety department personnel in the general office.
    • Assist in the education and motivation of safety department staff to follow safe work practices and maintain a safe working environment through training, presentations and the distribution of safety materials.
    • Implement and administer safety programs for all departments throughout the component including contractor certifications, safety orientations and training.
    • Prepare records, reports and make recommendations to management for action and/or correction.
    • Assist staff during office hours, on the telephone and in person by responding to inquiries using independent judgment, discretion and tact.
    • Maintain accurate records and files and prepare periodic and special reports.
    • Aid in assessing the applicability of federal DOT requirements and other road safety rules and regulations, the applicability of state OSHA requirements and other occupational health and safety rules and regulations and the applicability of TSA requirements and other security rules and regulations.
    • Make recommendations to appropriate management regarding policies and procedures and implement following approval to ensure compliance.
    • Investigate accidents, incidents and safety complaints and alert appropriate Management.
    • Based on regulations and policies and procedures, act as a resource for operating department managers and supervisors with regard to safety, health, environmental, licensing and permitting and select maintenance issues.
    • Assist in the interpretation of statutory requirements and evaluation and modification of loss control program components to ensure compliance with industry standards and legislative mandates established by general law.
    • Interview and confer with contractors and employees regarding safety issues and problems.
    • Act as liaison with contract and vending companies in overseeing the work of contractors and vendors providing safety services and equipment for the facility.
    • Provide support in the estimation of costs and effectiveness of various safety and maintenance programs.


    WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?


    Education and Experience:

    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Safety and Health, Transportation Safety, Business Administration or a related Science preferred
    • Minimum two to three years in transportation safety or transportation safety/compliance experience required.
    • Minimum one year Supervisor and industry experience.


    Certifications and Licenses:

    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) required; or
    • Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS); or
    • Other industry equivalent safety certification/training


    Skills:

    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, internet, web-based and job specific software applications.
    • Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently
    • In-depth knowledge of applicable state OSHA requirements and other occupational health and safety rules and regulations including DOT and EPA.
    • In-depth knowledge of federal and state safety laws.
    • Knowledgeable of warehouse operations and freight/logistics optimization.
    • Demonstrated understanding of key transportation concepts and key performance indicators (accidents per million-mile, injury frequency rates, EMOD, etc).


    Characteristics:

    • Ability to analyze complex problems and develop appropriate solutions.


    Travel: Required at least 5% of the time and is identified as 100% within the United States.
