Health Underwriting Director directs and oversees the health insurance underwriting program for individuals and/or groups for medical and/or dental insurance. Responsible for ensuring integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Being a Health Underwriting Director manages staff of underwriters at the organization. Provides assistance to underwriters on more complex applications. Additionally, Health Underwriting Director has a strong knowledge of the underwriting discipline. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Health Underwriting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. American National is seeking a full-time, Director of Underwriting Support to enhance current processes and procedures.
Placement Locations: Glenmont, NY. or Springfield, MO.
What will you do?
Implement new workflow methods to improve the efficiency of the Associate Underwriter team and demonstrates initiative and strategic thinking by continually evaluating existing processes
Ensures all recommended process changes follow compliance guidelines and an increased ease of doing business
Manages escalated policy service referrals from leaders and finalizes exception-based decisions and communicates/educates changes in referral guidelines to the department
Serves as a point of contact for agents, field leadership, and home office leaders regarding commercial policy service and directs efforts to address corrective action on policies that were not handled appropriately or where system issues prevented the delivery of exceptional service
Represent the division and the department when agents and field leadership visit the home office and demonstrate professionalism in all interactions with employees, agents, and third parties
Collaborates with other departments in overseeing and maintaining the business operations of the department and ensures partnership and cohesion across the Underwriting Services division enterprise
Collaborates with commercial/agriculture leaders to constantly find ways to integrate systems, training, procedures, workflow, and consistency among teams
Progresses goals and expectations as well as individual growth plans and provides specific and timely feedback through regular one-on-one meetings as well as the semiannual performance review process
Oversee and manage the flow of information within the department, including communications to internal and external teams
Facilitate the organization and maintenance of departmental resource systems, including SharePoint and other similar sites
Qualifications:
Applicable degree in relevant field or alike work experience considered
Eight years of industry appropriate experience
Five years of formal supervisory/management experience
Ability to navigate various computer programs simultaneously while utilizing noted applications (Microsoft Office and internal systems)
Minimal travel (Less than 10%)
Preferred Qualifications:
CPCU or industry relevant insurance designations
Property and Casualty Underwriting/Operations experience
Guidewire and Duck Creek system familiarity
Project management experience
