    The Neuroscience Service Line Director will serve as the operative leader in the development the stroke program and neuroscience service line for Providence St. Joseph Health Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance. The Director of the Neuroscience Service Line collaborates with the regional neuroscience leaders and is part of the regional neuroscience team.

    Provides leadership across the stroke and neuroscience continuum from community outreach, EMS collaboration through acute care and after-care maintenance. Plans and sets long-term objectives and directs activities to ensure volume growth, clinical and financial management, improving quality outcomes, and increased customer satisfaction for both physicians and patients.

    Direct operational responsibility includes Neuroscience Program Services, Collaborates with Directors and Managers of the Emergency Department, Inpatient Units, Quality/Data Leaders, Regulatory Manager, Operating Room Leaders, Interventional Lab, Outpatient Neuro Clinic and Services, Marketing Leader and Community to ensure overall coordination of care, program development and program/process improvement.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Neuroscience Service Line Development Leadership:

    • Demonstrates Providence Health & Services Mission and Core Values to customers, employees and visitors, and provides quality service in the performance of work assignments and duties.
    • With physician and hospital leadership, clearly define, and monitor strategic plan and manage direction for the program.
    • Establishes and facilitates professional relationships between primary care physicians, physician organizations, neurologists, neuro surgeons, neuroscience surgeons, and vascular surgeons.
    • Collaborates with educators, managers, and staff to evaluate staff education needs, capital equipment needs and supply purchases.
    • Works with regional leaders and medical center departments to develop systems for tracking and analyzing volume, revenue, financial results, customer service satisfaction (physician, patients/families), and outcomes for neuroscience, and vascular services.
    • Identifies best practices and facilitates benchmarking of key success factors.
    • Develops criteria for identifying general areas of potential risk in the clinical aspects of patient care and safety. Implements changes necessary to improve perceived problems in services to reduce risk and optimize delivery of care.
    • Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies governing neuroscience care, and rules, policy, and laws of accrediting agencies.
    • Manages material supplies and environment to ensure compliance with safety, licensing, and regulatory agencies.
    • Assures compliance with Joint Commission Stroke Standards.
    • Assures research program involvement to maintain compliance with The Joint Commission Stroke Certification Regulatory Standards.
    • Provides training to subordinates regarding new and revised policies and procedures to ensure quality hospital service.
    • Maintains sufficient staffing and monitors ongoing qualifications and competence of department personnel.
    • Establishes a mechanism for receiving and responding to patient/family complaints concerning patient care, analyzes concerns, and takes appropriate action.
    • Represents the neuroscience clinical services at department, hospital, and community events.
    • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

    Program Growth:

    • Directs development and implementation of a marketing strategy for the neuroscience, and stroke service line in collaboration with local administrative leadership and in conjunction with regional and market priorities.
    • Coordinate and align with regional goals the development and tracking of operational and capital budgets for neurosciences.
    • Initiate program and service development, evaluation, and restructuring to meet changing market needs.
    • Develops recruitment and retention strategies for Neuroscience Physicians, Neuroscience Advanced Practice Nurses and Hospital Staff.
    • Implements new business ventures which are innovative, cost effective, revenue producing, and market driven.
    • With clinical leadership, develops standards of patient care based on clinical practice guidelines and systematic analysis and data collection.
    • Implements, monitors, and documents ongoing program growth to ensure quality patient care using appropriate hospital resources (i.e., medical directors, QI coordinator, risk management).

    Stewardship:

    • Develops and pursues mutually beneficial business opportunities with outside hospitals, payers and hospital.
    • Develops working relationship with third-party payers in collaboration with Medical Directors, Utilization Review Medical Director and Director of Care Management.
    • Prepares, manages, and monitors operational and capital budgets for neuroscience, service line and analyzes and prioritizes budget expenditures in light of revenue impact on specified services.
    • Works with medical directors and/or key physicians to solicit physician support for cost containment. Researches cost-effective ways of decreasing inventory and improving vendor contracts.
    • Analyzes targeted existing stroke and neuroscience services for cost/benefit and develop strategies to improve their financial return.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration, or related field
    • Master's Degree in Nursing
    • Upon hire: California Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed)
    • Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association (Vendor Managed)
    • Within 1 year of hire: Lean Six Sigma Green Belt
    • 10 or more years of Clinical experience/experienced in critical care or neurology
    • Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams including physicians
    • Project Management
    • Lean Six-Sigma Training/Experience
    • Leadership and management experience
    • Proven experience in program development
    • Knowledge in market research, the marketing process, budgeting
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to manage change, promote positive interpersonal relations, and an understanding of physician bonding techniques and programs
    • Excellent skills in planning, organization, marketing and program management
    • Expertise in the management of clinical staff and facilities and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills in dealing with physicians, hospital and system administration, peers and staff.
