Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment or machinery, such as a tractor, bulldozer, backhoe, or excavator, for the purposes of construction, demolition, or excavation. Prepares equipment and conducts routine inspections prior to operation to ensure it is safe and in working condition. Being a Heavy Equipment Operator identifies and addresses potential hazards and adheres to all safety protocols and regulations. May be responsible for scheduling minor repairs and conducting routine maintenance like cleaning and lubricating. Additionally, Heavy Equipment Operator requires a high school diploma. May require State License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Heavy Equipment Operator independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisors. Primary Responsibility: Operates several types of heavy equipment in various job conditions and locations. May be asked to perform multiple jobs as needed to meet customer requirements.
Job Duties:
· Safely operates equipment in accordance with job site plans
· Operates equipment according to proper operational procedures
· Performs and documents regular maintenance checks, maintains adequate records of equipment performance
· Provides pre-operation and preventative maintenance to ensure equipment is safe and operating properly
· Regularly clean equipment to preserve its quality and functionality
· Perform minor repairs on equipment issues
· Report needs for larger repairs to the appropriate parties
· Abide by all local, state, federal regulations while operating equipment
· Commit to overall safety of the work environment by taking extra precautions and working with utmost care and consideration
· Performs all jobs as assigned by supervision and/or site lead person
Requirements and Qualifications:
· 2 years of experience working with various types of heavy equipment
· Possession of commercial driver’s license, or a willingness to obtain the license
· Knowledge of proper and safe operation of heavy equipment
· Ability to maintain, inspect, clean and occasionally repair pieces of heavy equipment
· Keen attention to detail and situational awareness to maintain the safety of the work environment
· Strong work ethic and physical ability to lift 50 pounds
· Basic knowledge of math and skills to read blueprints
· Knowledge of grade stakes and grade checking a plus
· Must be able to pass a physical.
· Must be able to pass a drug test.
· Possess ability to follow instructions with strong oral and written skills
· Report to assigned job area in proper attire and ready to begin work at the designated start time
· Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined by local regulations and OSHA/MSHA
Job Environment:
· Regularly works in outside in all weather conditions and is regularly exposed to airborne particles requiring safety glasses and other personal protection equipment
· Operators often work in noisy conditions and must wear proper hearing protection
· Job requires regularly sitting, bending, reaching, lifting, squatting, standing
· vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception
· Flexibility to work various schedules and stay late when necessary with little or no notice
· Must be willing to work evenings and weekends when necessary
Physical Requirements:
· Lift objects of various dimensions and weights
· Ability to climb stairs and ladders, reach, squat, push and pull objects
· Ability to tolerate working outdoors in all temperatures and weather
