DESCRIPTION
POSITION SUMMARY
The Health Information Director supervises and coordinates the activities related to coding, transcription, release of information, prior authorization, file room and document imaging functions and charge master functions of the Health Information Department to ensure that clinical information is transcribed, filed, coded, scanned, maintained, and released in accordance with the philosophy, goals and objectives of Gordon Memorial Hospital District. Holds the position of the Gordon Memorial Hospital (GMHS) Privacy Officer.
CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Assumes overall responsibility for the function of the Health Information Department.
- Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of employees engaged in the establishment, maintenance, control and dissemination of medical records and related patient information.
- Acts as the facility HIPAA Privacy Officer, assuming responsibility for compliance with all related laws and regulations.
- Protects organizations and physicians’ legal interests by ensuring medical records are maintained in compliance with all accreditation and governmental regulatory agency standards.
- Reviews records for completeness, accuracy, and conformance as required by hospital policy and governmental regulations.
- Supervises the release of patient information to outside entities, assuring compliance with the requirements of HIPAA Privacy regulations.
- Ensure that databases are secure and may only be accessed by authorized personnel.
- Develops and maintains knowledge of current coding systems, regulations, and procedures used in documenting diagnosis, treatment, and payment for patient encounters.
- Develops, implements, and monitors systems for the timely inclusion of information into the health record for each patient visit.
- Maintains records of medical staff membership, credentialing, and privileging.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
Experience:
- Experience in Medical Record
- 1 – 2 years previous management experience.
Licensure and Certification:
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Credentialed as RHIA or RHIT by the American Health Information Management Association
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Patient privacy rules and regulations
- Coding procedures and software

Ability to:
- Educate department personnel on issues related to departmental function, organization policies and procedures.
