Position Function
The Deputy Director for Research Development works closely with the Executive Director of the International Institute and the Director of International Research Development to provide strategic leadership to the unit, which includes understanding the university's research focus areas and identifying funded research opportunities that coincide with MSU's demonstrated expertise.
The Director works closely with faculty and research staff to provide administrative and professional support for the development of extramurally funded research proposals. This includes ensuring compliance with complex university, state, and federal policies and regulations and donor/agency requirements. The Director is expected to consult with staff within the university and outside constituents including program officers and collaborators at other universities, to provide quality administrative guidance to researchers, maximizing the likelihood of successful submissions.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Assist the Executive Director and relevant MSU units of any number of risk management and compliance functions necessary for international services.
- Manage and coordinate the activities and personnel of the Research and Partnership Development Unit at the International Institute
- Design and manage a robust data gathering and reporting system to evaluate Institute activities and the university's international activities.
- Manage and coordinate successful post-award management of grants and contracts both internal and external to the Institute.
- Lead and collaborate with Institute staff, MSU faculty, external clients, and international collaborators to develop proposals for externally funded grants and contracts.
- Lead and collaborate with Institute staff, MSU faculty, external clients, and international collaborators to develop international opportunities for faculty/staff professional development.
- Coordinate and oversee international partner agreements including the negotiation of specific terms, strategic areas of growth, expansion of high-quality partnerships, and, where possible, engagement of research, faculty/staff/student development opportunities, and growth in external funding.
- Assist the Executive Director in establishing and implementing short- and long-range goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures for all Institute activities.
- Manage and oversee communications and promotion of Institute and other international activities.
- Plan and lead meetings, workshops, and presentations as necessary.
- Support the business and administrative operations of the Institute as requested.
- Work independently to lead projects and accomplish responsibilities
- Be highly customer focused and responsive to customer needs whether internal or external.
- Prepare and present project status reports, including necessary reports and budgets.
- Flexible and willing to change assignments and responsibilities regularly throughout the year.
- Support all other activities as requested.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree.
Experience (yrs): Five years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate degree in a related area

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of
constituencies in a diverse community.
- Strong ability to work autonomously and independently to manage project.
- Ability to be flexible and adjust to changing tasks, priorities and deadlines.
- Experience with making presentations and leading meetings.
- Ability to develop and organize a written plan with objective, actions, milestones, budgets, timelines,
success measurements, and evaluation methods.
- Ability to write grants and proposals for external funding.
- Ability to use technology to deliver products and services.
- Ability to anticipate barriers to project completion; plan and manage contingencies.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
- No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
- No or very limited physical effort required.
- Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
- International travel will be required to perform some responsibilities.
