Instructor - Education teaches courses in the discipline area of education. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Instructor - Education provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - Education typically reports to a department head. Has a Master's degree or is a PhD candidate in the applicable field. Has experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate level and possesses the qualifications to participate in research. Educational Instructor (Outdoor Education)

  • Wonder Valley Outdoor Education Center, as part of the Western Camps Inc., delivers intentional and deliberate outdoor education programs to the greater Central California region. Our program is run on site, with qualified and trained instructors leading classes that include Archery, Orienteering, Tree Ecology, Team Building and more. While our location and amenities are a big part of our program, the staff themselves are the core of our community.

    This seasonal full time position is required to live on site during the season. This position works both indoors and outdoors, and will have paid training in all areas of the job.

    Responsibilities:

    • Act as part of the staff team to provide quality programming to school groups and resort groups.
    • Prepare and instruct classes based on curriculum set by the program such as Science-Based classes (Rocketry, Journey of the Water Cycle, etc.) or Adventure-Based classes (Archery, Canoeing, Ropes Course).
    • Facilitate activities for resort programs.
    • Lead or assist with evening programs when assigned.
    • Actively contribute to the staff as a whole, assisting as needed in other areas of the resort.
    • Have good open communication with peers, leadership team, management, and other departments, modeling a positive, solution based approach to problem solving.
    • Model and enforce company policies.
    • Have good time management skills, making sure that programs run the appropriate amount of time.
    • Ensure that all Wonder Valley property and materials are kept well-maintained and in good condition. Take inventory and restock supplies as needed.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience working with youth in schools, outdoor programs, camps, coaching, or other relevant experience.
    • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
    • Interest in natural sciences, team building and outdoor experiential learning.
    • Ability to work with diverse populations (culture, ability level, age, sexual orientation, language, race, etc.)
    • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
    • Ability to walk, stand, and move for extended periods of time. Ability to carry up to 50 lbs of gear or program equipment.

    Additional experience that will be taken into consideration when hiring:

    • Current Red Cross Lifeguard or ability to become one.
    • Current Level 1 ACCT Certification, or experience with belaying, climbing, or team building.
    • Current First Aid/CPR Certification
    • Former experience working in Outdoor Education, Environmental Education, or Experiential Education.
    • Ability to speak proficiently in another language besides English is helpful but not required.
