Instructor - Philosophy teaches courses in the discipline area of philosophy. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Instructor - Philosophy provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - Philosophy typically reports to a department head. Has a Master's degree or is a PhD candidate in the applicable field. Has experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate level and possesses the qualifications to participate in research.     The CCBC Philosophy Program anticipates the need for an individual to prepare and teach introductory courses in Philosophy to first- and second-year students.  Introductory courses include Introduction to Philosophy, Ethics, Critical Thinking, and Introduction to World Religions. Full-time faculty are required to teach 15 credit hours per semester, maintain at least one office hour per week for each course taught, remain active and current in their field, participate in college committees, and perform other duties as assigned.  Additionally, full-time faculty are required to participate with program faculty in developing, evaluating, and managing courses and curricula, and to collaborate effectively with discipline colleagues and with those from other disciplines, and seek continuous improvement in teaching methodology and student success.  Faculty are also encouraged to participate in program coordination and related administrative duties. This position will likely involve teaching at more than one campus. 

    Required

    Master’s degree in Philosophy.


    Preferred

    Two years teaching and/or experience working with non-traditional and diverse student populations preferred.   Experience serving as program coordinator or involvement in related administrative experience preferred.   Experience utilizing classroom technology and learning management systems preferred. Experience integrating diverse philosophical theories and thinkers into instruction preferred. Experience organizing and moderating student activities preferred. Prior college teaching experience preferred.

    1. Facilitate and support student learning by developing and providing clear and effective instruction using traditional and technology-based instruction.
    2. Meet all classes as assigned during instructional periods. Basic teaching load is 15 contact hours each week.
    3. Communicate effectively with students by disseminating academic information including syllabi and academic policies, and by responding to e-mails and phone calls from students in a timely manner.
    4. Provide opportunities to meet with students (Office hours) at least one hour each week for scheduled or unscheduled meetings for each three credits of teaching contact hours.
    5. Provide effective and appropriate assessment with prompt qualitative and quantitative feedback.
    6. Keep instructional materials and student work organized and accessible. Maintain Learning Management System, providing students access to syllabi, grades and other supplemental course material.
    7. Support students and other college units and comply with relevant state and federal laws (nominate tutors, write letters of recommendation, refer students to counseling, assist students with special needs, suggest library purchases, help resolve registration issues, maintain student privacy).
    8. Collaborate with colleagues in ongoing curricular development including content update, curricular alignment, consistent assessment practices, and record keeping.
    9. Collaborate with staff by completing and submitting reports and documentation in a timely manner.
    10. Attend and participate in committee, departmental, College, and School meetings.
    11. Provide College and Community Service through collegial and individual initiatives.
    12. Maintain and develop professional expertise through ongoing professional development or scholarship.
