Being an Intellectual Property Attorney aids in protecting the organization's assets in the area of intellectual property. Requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Additionally, Intellectual Property Attorney requires admittance to a state bar. Typically reports to a manager. The Intellectual Property Attorney work is closely managed.     Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. (Other duties may be assigned.)


    • Patent Research and Analysis: Assists in conducting patent searches to identify prior art and helps to assess patentability of innovations. Analyzes patent landscape under guidance of senior team members and/or IP Counsel. Participates in review of new innovations for IP approach and supports in drafting applications and responding to office actions.

    • IP Portfolio Management: Assists in maintaining IP portfolio database and records including patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. Supports the organization and documentation of patent related issues including coordinating responses to IP counsel, communication with annuity providers and coordinating annual patent maintenance discussions. Participates in overall portfolio reviews and strategy discussions.

    • IP Compliance and Process Development: Work with IP counsel and Sr. team members to ensure trade secret, patent, and trademark approaches are compliant with the latest guidance. Ensure adherence to state, federal and international policies. Develop and refine processes around innovation disclosure, patent review, trade secret determination and protection, trademark maintenance, patent maintenance, and annuity management. Review Non-Disclosure and Consultant Agreements to ensure protection of company intellectual property.

    • IP Enforcement and Defense: Assists in monitoring market trends and competitor activities directly and through communication with IP counsel. Coordinates evidence gathering for IP enforcement actions and assists in conducting prior art searches to support IP defense efforts.

    • Technology Assessment and Due Diligence: Participates in technical assessments of third-party technologies. Assists in conducting IP due diligence reviews for potential M&A opportunities.

    • IP Education and Training: Participate in further development of company wide IP training and focused sessions and workshops. Assists in the development of educational materials on IP best practices including approaches for trade secrets, patents, and trademarks.

    Required Education and/or Experience


    Bachelor’s degree in business, law, engineering, science, or other related discipline. Minimum of one year experience in intellectual property or coursework related to intellectual property.


    Other Useful Skills and Abilities

    • Ability to use Microsoft Excel for spreadsheets, Microsoft Word for word processing, other office products and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools.
    • Experience or knowledge in the medical device field.
    • Basic understanding of patent law and intellectual property concepts.
    • Strong analytical and research skills along with excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
    • Detail and action oriented with a commitment to accuracy and enthusiastic about learning and growing in the field of intellectual property.
    • IP experience in manufacturing, design engineering, research & development, or similar field.
