Policy and Field Relations Associate

  • The CJJ Policy and Field Relations Associate is a key part of CJJ’s work with its members and national
    partners. The Associate keeps abreast of challenges and innovations in state and local juvenile justice
    practice and policy as well as relevant research and legislative affairs. Using that knowledge, the
    Associate helps develop policy papers, training materials and other resources for the field and for
    other national organizations, including delivering technical assistance as needed to practitioners. With
    support from CJJ leadership, the Associate plans, develops, and implements the provision of national
    and regional training and technical assistance to the organization’s members and allies. The Associate
    works within parameters set by public and private grants and represents the organization with
    partners, funders, and the public. The Associate is responsible for creating and conducting needs
    assessments, creating and conducting training and technical assistance (TA) programs for state/local
    members and partners, matching training and TA to identified needs, and evaluating the effectiveness
    of CJJ’s training and TA.

    This is a full-time position (40 hours per week), reporting to the CJJ Executive Director and
    Associate Director.

    Major Areas of Responsibility:
    Reviews new research relevant to juvenile justice and “translates” it into practice-focused

    guidance for the field and policymakers.
    • Performs legislative trends monitoring analysis and drafts policy papers.
    • Develop written products such as fact sheets, training handbooks, toolkits, and issue briefs.
    • Identifies key issues, challenges or trends in the field of juvenile justice and
    proposes/develops responsive training and written materials.
    • Serves as a point person on training and technical assistance grants and partnerships.
    • Creates and conducts needs assessments or survey tools to determine the training needs,

    preferences and modalities that will meet the needs and goals of CJJ members, allies, and
    partners.

    • Organizes and facilitates the preparation of expert presenters for CJJ conferences, and events.
    • Under the supervision of senior staff, develops training and technical assistance materials,

    curricula, and resources with an understanding of adult learning principles.

    • Ensures that CJJ’s available training opportunities are well marketed and communicated.
    • Facilitates webinars and training in collaboration with outside partners.
    • Monitors and evaluates training effectiveness including use of technology, learning conditions,
    cost-effectiveness and overall reach and impact of CJJ training events.
    • Ensures comprehensive documentation of training provided, consultants used, participants,
    contracts, expenditures, income, etc.
    • Provide on-site support at CJJ in-person conferences and key events (travel may be required).

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    Bachelor’s degree or greater in social sciences, education, social work, law and justice related

    fields, public health or other fields of relevance to the work of juvenile justice reform.
    • Working knowledge of juvenile justice systems and the intersection of local, state and federal
    juvenile justice and delinquency prevention initiatives.
    • Excellent written communication skills and high level of productivity in synthesizing and
    reporting complex material for a public audience, in written form.
    • Public speaking experience across a range of venues and proven ability to motivate others
    through presentations and verbal communication.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multi-faceted projects involving partnerships and
    collaborations.
    • Broad knowledge and experience in managing all aspects of staging, funding, promoting and

    managing training and technical assistance involving juvenile justice content (or similar
    content) and multiple learning objectives and tracks of activity.

    • Superb interpersonal skills.
    • Strong aptitude in use of all Microsoft Office 365, Google Workspace, and Canva software and
    related applications.
    • Ability to travel 3-8 times per year for conferences, events, training, or on-site technical

    assistance provision.

    Required Education and Training
    Bachelor’s or higher degree in social sciences, education, social work, law and justice related

    fields, public health or other fields of relevance to the work of juvenile justice reform.
    • 2-5 years relevant experience.

    Compensation
    This is an hourly position with a pay range of $24.04 to $28.85 per hour (equivalent to a range

    of up to $50,000 - $60,000 annually), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
    • This position is eligible for health and dental benefits, retirement benefits, and paid time off in

    accordance with personnel policies.

    Schedule
    Monday through Friday
    • Occasional evenings, weekends, conferences activities will be required.
