Community and Media Relations Specialist

    SUMMARY:
    Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Operations, works to support the mission of the Nampa School District to provide increased positive awareness of the district and its schools and students, share the District’s mission, vision, and beliefs. Build understanding, support and commitment for productive change and continuous improvement. Community and Media Relations Specialist will play a crucial role in building and maintaining positive relationships between the district and the local community.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Serves as the communication liaison between the media, community organizations and the District.
    • Represents the District by actively participating in community boards, city committees, and local service clubs and organizations.
    • Writes news releases for local newspapers, television and radio stations.
    • Assists with social media accounts and provides content for district page and support for schools’ Facebook, Twitter, and others.
    • Responsible for working with the Executive Director of Operations and the leadership team to develop, implement and monitor a comprehensive plan for internal and external communication to keep all stakeholders informed of district polices, programs and special events.
    • Researches and analyzes district programs and communicates positive outcomes and achievements to the community through a variety of means, including articles, newsletters, and verbal reports.
    • Cooperates with district administrators and other staff members, as appropriate, in publicizing and promoting District initiatives, performances, exhibitions, displays, dedications and/or special programs sponsored by schools and open to the public, and emergency procedures.
    • Responds to community inquiries and concerns in a timely and professional manner, working to resolve issues and enhance the district’s relationship with the community.
    • Public Records Requests
    • Speaks at staff, parent, and general community meetings on behalf of the District when requested.
    • Provides public relations and communication counsel and assistance to District and building-level staff.
    • Stays current with communications policies and procedures at other schools and districts, in order to be familiar with new technologies and with alternative ways of effectively communicating with students, parents and the public.
    • Assists with district brand promotion and marketing in the community.
    • Assists with planning and providing factual information for elections, including supplemental levies and bonds, and serves as a liaison to community groups.
    • Reviews and approves flyers from outside community groups.
    • Assume responsibility for his or her continuing professional growth and development by attendance at professional meetings, membership in professional organizations, enrollment in advanced courses and by reading professional journals and other publications.
    • Seeks assistance should emergencies arise.
    • Represents the school district in a positive manner.
    • Knows and follows school district policy and chain of command.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in communication, journalism, public relations, marketing or related field.
    • At least 3-5 years of experience in community relations, public relations or related field.
    • Prior experience in public education preferred.


    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing (Microsoft Office), spreadsheets (Excel), and presentation software.
    • Strong public relations, interpersonal, communication, social media platforms, photography and video skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with internal and external partners.
    • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to keep track of detailed information and data.
    • Ability to work independently and take initiative, while also being a team player.
    • Passion for education and a commitment to improving the lives of children and families in the community.
    • Knowledge of communication programs for an educational organization.


    COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read, analyze and interpret governmental regulations, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to write extensive and comprehensive reports and correspondence of superior quality. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, managers, employees, clients, customers, and/or the general public. Ability to conduct high quality public presentations with style and grace.


    PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS:

    Demonstrate sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns.


    PRODUCTIVITY/EFFICIENCY SKILLS:

    Consistently demonstrate ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary; organize job functions and work area to be able to effectively complete varied assignments within established time frame.


    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

    Ability to conduct basic math functions.


    REASONING ABILITY:

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram form. Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with severe abstract and concrete variables.
