The Staff Biologist - Laboratory Operations Specialist will assist with general program organization and operation tasks and activities and will participate in field and laboratory activities associated with various projects.
Essential Job Functions:
Primary Duties: The Laboratory Operations Specialist will be responsible for multiple tasks within the Program including: maintaining, ordering and inventory of laboratory supplies and chemicals; coordination and organization of field efforts/activities, including personnel, supplies, equipment and record keeping (maintaining custody/log sheets); proofing of cell count, environmental and ancillary data entered in the FWRI HAB database; scheduling maintenance/calibration of laboratory and field equipment and maintaining records; assisting with program quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) protocols and procedures; assisting program manager with project scheduling and budgets; assisting with assembling/organization of reports, presentations, proposals, etc. (accessing literature, formatting, etc.); assisting with organization of program events; assisting with projects and experimental studies as needed, including field work and laboratory processing of field and laboratory samples. Other duties and responsibilities, as described below, may be assigned as needed and as time allows.
Additional Duties: Additional activities and responsibilities may be assigned as needed. These duties may be temporary in nature and may include; microscopic identification and enumeration of Karenia brevis and other phytoplankton; entry of data into databases and spreadsheets; collection and synthesis of information from the primary literature for incorporation in proposals, reports and publications; occasional assistance to other Laboratory Programs; assistance and participation in Laboratory special events; and other duties as required.
Working Hours: This position will be full-time. Flexibility in working hours may be required, depending on planned laboratory and field work. Occasional longer workdays may be required.
Minimum Requirements: A baccalaureate degree (BS) in biology, aquatic ecology, marine science, or related field and at least 1 year experience in activities closely related to this position is required. Candidate must have established skills in Microsoft Office (and/or other similar programs), knowledge of general laboratory skills, good communication skills and ability to maintain a high level of work quality and accuracy.
