Laboratory Manager manages the daily activities of the laboratory. Develops laboratory policies and procedures and issues updates as needed. Being a Laboratory Manager plans and designs experiments. Estimates the time and resources needed to complete projects. Additionally, Laboratory Manager orders and inspects materials and equipment and maintains detailed and accurate inventory of lab supplies. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Laboratory Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Laboratory Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Summary:

    This position requires managing the Nursing Clinical Skills Laboratory, orienting and supervising Nursing Student Clinical Skills Lab Teaching Assistants and any students in labor positions at CHI St. Joseph Berea, assisting faculty in setting up equipment and supplies for clinical skills including simulation experiences, and providing CPR recertification for nursing students and faculty.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Education required to ensure success in this position:
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree with current unrestricted Kentucky license
    • Training or willingness to train as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist
    • Training or willingness to train as a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) instructor
    Experience required to ensure success in this position:
    • At least one year (1) year of recent nursing clinical skills laboratory experience
    • At least five (5) years of experience in a variety of acute care settings with proficient level of skill competence
    License, certification, or registration necessary:
    • Maintain current CPR certification for health care providers
    • Valid Driver’s License
    Physical requirements:
    • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
    • Skills lab equipment (e.g., Alaris pump, hospital beds, suction, manikins, monitors)

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     1. Manage the Nursing Skills Laboratory and Simulation Center

    • Orient, supervise, train, and evaluate Nursing Student Clinical Lab Teaching Assistants and any students with labor positions at CHI St. Joseph Berea
    • Coordinate scheduling of the skills lab
    • Conduct annual inventory of equipment and supplies
    • Assist with purchase of equipment and supplies
    • Maintain proficiency in use of equipment and supplies
    2. Maintain the Periodic Automatic Replenishment (PAR) inventory system
    • Recommend, order and purchase lab supplies for nursing courses and department activities
    • Orient faculty, staff, and students (e.g., procedures, use of materials, equipment operation)
    3. Ensure a safe and welcoming environment in the Nursing Skills Laboratory and Simulation Center
    • Follow standard operating procedures including safety regulations
    • Ensure safe storage and removal of hazardous materials and waste including sharps
    • Provide training and enforcement of safety procedures to faculty, staff, and students
    4. Supervise students during scheduled and drop-in lab sessions
    • Work respectfully with Berea College’s diverse student population
    • Promote a safe, positive learning environment in the lab
    • Ensure TAs send weekly lab use reports to faculty for their students
    • Ensure students follow the dress code, policies, and procedures of the lab
    5. Collaborate with the faculty and staff
    • Coordinate simulation and lab schedules with faculty and staff

    • Assist with setting up equipment and supplies for clinical skills and simulations

    • Ensure supplies are stocked in simulation rooms for scenarios
    6. In support of Berea College’s Great Commitments this position requires student supervision. The fourth Great Commitment is to promote learning and serving in community through the student labor program, honoring the dignity and utility of all work, mental and manual, and taking pride in work well done. The Supervision would include scheduling, assigning and approving work performed. Developing students about common workplace acumen and giving them tangible work experience is an expected outcome.
