Legal Intern

  • The City of Bonney Lake Prosecuting Attorney's Office is recruiting for a college intern. This position is not paid but an opportunity to earn course credit for hours completed.  The preferred availability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Availability to work on site at the Bonney Lake Municipal Justice Center a minimum of one out of three scheduled court days per week. Preferred availability to work on site Mondays and/or Wednesdays 9 am-4 pm. Court is held 9 am-4 pm Mondays and Wednesdays, and Tuesdays 9am-Noon. We are hiring for fall 2024, spring 2025 and summer 2025.

    Area of Law:
    Prosecution (may be some civil work, time permitting).  This internship will provide opportunity for exposure to prosecution criminal trial practice. The intern will work closely with the prosecutor's office staff and law enforcement, and is in regular contact with judges, court clerks, the defense bar, police officers, witnesses, victims, city staff, and the general public. 
    • Assist attorneys with drafting legal documents such as basic court forms, motions, and legal briefs.
    • Attend with and support attorneys in bench and jury trials, arraignments, pre-trial hearings, sentencing hearings, appeals, forfeitures, and other court hearings. 
    • Assist attorneys with case information by reviewing police reports and defendant criminal history.
    • Assist attorneys with case preparation duties such as researching legal precedent, developing arguments, and interviewing witnesses, officers, and victims.
    • Assist attorneys with researching changes in the law; assist attorneys in preparing training slide decks or training updates for staff, department heads, and Council. 
    • Performs duties in accordance with appropriate safety standards as outlined in the Accident Prevention Plan or other position specific safety responsibilities.
    Education and Experience:
    • Completion of two years of college;
    • Preference for completion of course work in pre-law, criminal justice, law and justice, political science, or similar field;
    • Must pass a criminal history background, CJIS fingerprint background check, and reference check;
    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Enthusiasm and desire to learn about criminal law, municipal law, legal field, and public service; Methods, principles, and practices of effective conflict resolution; Personal computers and computer programs, specifically Microsoft Office products.
    • Skill in: Correct usage of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; Professional, high quality oral and written communications; Effectively using interpersonal skills in a tactful, patient, and courteous manner; Performance of research and investigation; Working independently with minimum supervision; Meeting schedules and timelines; Using research, investigation, and analytical methods, practices, and procedures.
    • Ability to: Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; Analyze, organize, and evaluate case facts, evidence, and legal precedents; Read, interpret, apply, and explain codes, rules, regulations, policies, case law, and procedures; Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; Communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing; Prepare documents using Microsoft software; Demonstrate positive and effective interaction and communication with individuals of diverse occupational and social-economic backgrounds; Work effectively on several projects concurrently and meet deadlines; Ability to de-escalate and interact calmly with confrontational individuals/situations; Maintain confidentiality.

    Tools and Equipment Used
     Requires frequent use of typical business office machinery and equipment including, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, telephone, copy machine, fax machine, and legal research databases and Microsoft computer programs.
      
     Physical Demands
    The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. 
      
     Work Environment
     Work is performed mostly in office settings. . The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
