Legal Services Director oversees the activities of the organization's legal department. Provides legal advice, interpretation, and guidance to senior management and officers regarding contracts, state/federal regulatory requirements, intellectual property or trademark protection, and other business matters. Being a Legal Services Director reviews all information and prepares defense for any legal actions against the organization or advises on prosecuting lawsuits on behalf of the organization. Coordinates and reviews the work of internal or external legal staff. Additionally, Legal Services Director manages staff of attorneys. Requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Requires admittance to a state bar. Typically reports to top management. The Legal Services Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Legal Services Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE) seeks a progressive leader with a commitment to justice for all and to inclusive communities, an interest in aggressively pursuing results for clients, and a strong vision for the future of legal services, to serve as its Director of Advocacy. This is an exciting leadership opportunity for an experienced attorney and effective advocate committed to equal justice. This position can be based out of ABLE’s Dayton, Toledo, or Defiance office.
    ABLE carries out its mission through a strategic plan using broad-based advocacy efforts to address critical client needs and focused advocacy to achieve long-lasting results. The Director of Advocacy will lead a team of attorneys to implement ABLE’s strategic advocacy initiatives in the practice areas of education, housing and community economic development, agricultural workers’ rights, immigration, and healthcare and public benefits. The Director of Advocacy works with teams of advocates to develop litigation and advocacy designed to have deep and lasting impact on communities, and to create equity and justice.
    In addition to guiding the work of attorneys and practice groups, the Director of Advocacy has major management responsibilities within the firm and leads collaborative efforts with other organizations and partners working with our client communities, including close collaboration with an LSC funded non-profit law firm, Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO) and other programs in Ohio. The Director of Advocacy is also expected to build relationships and collaborate with national and state advocacy groups and support centers.
    A successful applicant must be a member of the Ohio Bar, have at least seven years of litigation, trial, and advocacy experience, and possess excellent legal, administrative, teamwork, and communications skills. The Director of Advocacy must demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, racial equity, and justice for disadvantaged individuals and communities. Experience in legal services, civil rights, federal litigation, working with community groups, and familiarity with community lawyering is highly preferred.
    Competitive salary based on relevant experience (Starts at $95,000); comprehensive fringe benefits, including loan repayment assistance; possible hybrid work schedule.
