Job Title: Children’s/Teens Library Assistant (part-time) Hours: (17) per week

Function:
Under the direction of the Head of Children’s & Teen Services is responsible for providing service at the Children’s Reference Desk; provides readers’ advisory; prepares promotional materials; assists, plans, and conducts children’s and teen programs. Assists users of all ages in the use of the catalog, electronic resources and equipment. This is a regular, non-union, non-exempt position.
Typical Duties, Responsibilities, Tasks & Assignments:
- Assists patrons in locating appropriate material.
- Plans and conducts in-house and outreach story times and programming as assigned.
- Prepares and distributes promotional material, including but not limited to press releases, bibliographies, signage and displays.
- Understands and can perform all jobs related to receiving and placing reserves, system-wide hold requests and interlibrary loans.
- Uses a variety of tools, including social media, to further the reach of the Children’s & Teen Departments and the Library.
- Assumes responsibility for a program in temporary absence of a librarian.
- Assists in the recruitment, training and supervision of the Children’s and Teen Department’s volunteers.
- Assists with collection development, including evaluation, selection, receiving and processing shipments and weeding as assigned.
- Helps maintain an environment that is attractive, inviting and safe for families.
- Assists in the contribution of relevant material to the Library’s website.
- Attends Children’s Department and Library staff meetings. Represents the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library at various outside meetings, workshops and seminars as appropriate.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Special Skills and Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of related experience working with children within a library setting required. Must possess a familiarity with and enjoyment of children’s literature as well as the ability to communicate clearly, pleasantly and courteously with child(ren) and adult patrons, as well as staff. Must be proficient in Windows Microsoft Office applications and email and have the ability to troubleshoot computer and printer problems. Demonstrates a high degree of comfort with technology and the ability to learn and apply new skills. Exhibits flexibility and the willingness to work in a dynamic, busy and changing environment.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to obtain and replace books from shelving in the stacks and on all levels, walking and standing for extended time periods and carrying reasonable selection of materials between places where they are stored and places where they are used in the building. Ability to work with equipment associated with a library, including step stools, ladders and book trucks that occasionally may weigh in excess of 100 lbs. Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
