    General Purpose

     

    Under the direction of the building principal and district library specialists, this position is responsible for overseeing the school library including: creating and maintaining a welcoming reading environment, overseeing classes during library time, delivering provided library instruction to classes, offering read-alouds, maintaining the collection, and managing circulation.

     

    Main Tasks and Responsibilities

     

    • Assist students at the circulation desk, checking books and material in and out.
    • Re-shelve books and other Media Center materials.
    • Plan schedule of classes so that each class meets at least weekly in the library; help coordinate usage of the Media Center by classes.
    • Plan, spend, and keep a record of budgeted monies for books, periodicals, audio-visual equipment, etc.
    • Type requisitions for materials from catalogs and subscribe to bulletins for student books.
    • Obtain bids for certain purchases of Media Center materials.
    • Inventory Media Center equipment, books and other materials.
    • Repair books and media materials.
    • Assist teachers in checking out audio-visual equipment and instruct them in its use
    • Catalog and make pockets for new books, videos, etc.
    • Keep the Media Center tidy; straighten tables and chairs; dust and cleans display case windows.
    • Create displays throughout the Media Center and in the halls.
    • Prepare print materials needed in the Media Center (overdue notices, admit slips for teachers, etc.)
    • Maintain Media Center materials; clean and repair books, filmstrips, videos, software, etc.
    • Oversee use of computers, VCRs, and camcorders.
    • Encourage student reading by devising programs and units of study and by providing a stimulating environment in the Media Center.
    • Give students direction in using the Dewey Decimal system, alphabetical and numerical systems, and other forms of reference material.
    • Update curriculum support materials by using state and district core curriculum guides.
    • Select and read stories, magazine articles, etc. to students.
    • Give direction to students and teachers in operating all equipment in the Media Center.
    • Plan, create, and provide self-teaching materials for students to gain skills in using the Media Center.
    • Process new materials for inclusion in the Media Center and for classrooms.
    • Provide information to teachers concerning copyright policy.
    • Ensure equipment is operational
    • Answer telephone.
    • Plan activities for the Media Center.
    • Videotape programs, other tapes, etc. for teachers; may put on the school system’s hookup to classrooms as needed.
    • Collect overdue books at the end of the year as well as payment for lost or damaged books.
    • Attend in-service meetings with Districts’ instructional development personnel.
    • Read, scan, and evaluate books and materials for possible use in the Media Center.
    • Set up equipment, such as the sound system or video camera recorder, as requested.
    • May arrange a Media Center for meetings.
    • May laminate materials and/or give direction to teachers in using laminating equipment.
    • May order films (from the District or outside source) for school entertainment.
    • May occasionally help in office.
    • May supervise student and/or adult volunteers in shelving books, filing, etc.

     

    Other Duties as Assigned

     

    • Aid counselors with the student registration process.
    • Organize SEOP files for counselor’s use.
    • Answer telephone, greet the public and assist guidance secretaries as needed.
    • Guide students through computer generated career exploration assessment.
    • Maintain various data banks and publish lists of information.
    • Schedule students or make changes under the direction of a counselor.
    • Schedule appointments and mails information as requested.
    • Assist teachers in working one-on-one with students in reading, math, science, etc.
    • Assist with reading chains in the elementary schools.
    • Duplicate and prepare materials for teachers by making copies of worksheets, laminating charts and other materials.
    • Instruct students on various computer programs in order to be tested for Accelerated Reader Programs.
    • Monitor and reinforce behavioral interventions and programs as outlined.
    • Assist in teaching social/academic skills.
    • Monitor/record data required for behavior, academic, and IEP plans.
    • Supervise children in the playground.
    • Mediate arguments, fights between students.
    • Notify supervisor of serious rule infractions/incidents.
    • Administer minor first aid.
    • Enforce school rules.
    • Escort students to and from the playground.
    • Distributes playground equipment and storage.
    • Supervise students and intervene when socially appropriate.
    • Assist with bilingual/monolingual children in understanding classroom material.
    • Tutor students (with English deficiencies) in small groups and/or individually in reading, writing, and speaking English, etc.
    • Assist the Bilingual Teacher in planning lessons; using a variety of instructional methods to help the student individually; use English and Spanish (and possibly other languages) in the classroom.
    • Assist in language assessment and evaluation of students.
    • Assist the teacher in the preparation of portfolios for English-deficient students; collect data on each student; and communicate with other school personnel regarding these students.
    • Administer tests at beginning and end of school year; records data on student progress as required by supervisors, as assigned.
    • Develop, coordinate and host Career and College Exploration for Juniors involving more than 12 college workshop presentations from two local colleges: coordinate/communicate with workshop presenters; coordinate classroom/student participation and student handout. 
    • Develop/host OHS Career Fair for all OHS students:  solicit area businesses for participation; coordinate classroom/student participation; create student Career Fair handout.

     

    Education and Experience

     

    • 48 college credit hours or a passing score on the ParaPro test
    • Six (6) months of related experience
    • Knowledge and skill in understanding and using alphabetical and numerical systems, in organizing and maintaining catalog systems, and in handling finances

     

    Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

     

    • The job occasionally requires light physical exertion including walking, standing, motor vehicle operation and other forms of light physical activity.
    • The job occasionally requires a moderate level of physical exertion such as handling medium weight materials (11-50 pounds), extensive standing, walking, crawling, bending, stooping or climbing, or assisting special education students with their physical needs.
    • Work is carried out in an agreeable environment as generally represented by normal office conditions and little or no unpleasant elements.
    • Work is occasionally carried out in mildly disagreeable conditions.  Work involves exposure to unpleasant elements such as noise, ventilation, crowded nature of work, exposure to outside weather conditions, pressures related to sensitive situations, sitting;/standing in one position for an extended period of time, etc., that yield a perceptible level of discomfort.
    • Typically involves contact with students, parents, teachers, principal, assistant principal and/or other staff members.
