Library Services Director supervises, maintains, and enhances policies and procedures for a library. Oversees professional and support staff involved in cataloging, indexing, issuing books/materials, and keeping records of items on loan. Being a Library Services Director selects books and publications for purchase and subscribes to pertinent periodicals as allowed for by the given budget. Requires master's of library and information science from an ALA-accredited school. Additionally, Library Services Director typically reports to top management. The Library Services Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Library Services Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Summary

    Under immediate supervision of the Mobile Services Manager or Designee, this position supports the Mobile Services Team mission, to deliver the Library to patrons in the community and to increase public access to materials and resources by reducing barriers. Cross-training, back-up support, and the ability to perform all of Mobile Services programs is essential.


    Schedule


    Tuesday-Thursday: 8 am - 5:30 pm.

    Friday: 8 am - 5 pm.

    Saturday: 4.5 hours; variable and dependent on events. 

    *In case of no events, the schedule will flex Monday-Friday. 


    Job Duties (Essential Functions)

    1. Maintains effective, courteous working relationships with all library customers and staff by telephone, email, mail, and in-person.
    2. Selects and prepares materials for Mobile Services patrons.
    3. Serves as an outreach associate and engages underserved populations at events and stops; showcases library resources, promotes library services, seeks feedback.
    4. Drives Mobile Services vehicles to community events, stops, and delivery sites.
    5. Keeps the Mobile Services vehicles neat, clean, and inviting for the patrons and organizations served.
    6. Recruits potential patrons for Mobile Services programs.
    7. Assists in planning and implementing community engagement events and programming for all ages in the community.
    8. Provides circulation services by creating library cards, assisting with patron accounts, checking out library materials, placing holds for patrons, etc.
    9. Provides reader’s advisory, viewers and listeners assistance to Library patrons.
    10. Refers and connects patrons to appropriate library staff when they have specific needs that Mobile Services is unable to meet.
    11. Processes materials and operates the Automated Material Handler (AMH). Discharges and organizes returned materials.
    12. Maintains stats and submits monthly report to Mobile Services Manager.
    13. Participates in interdepartmental meetings as appropriate.
    14. Provides backup support for all Mobile Services programs as needed.
    15. Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assigned.
    16. Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    1. Demonstrated willingness and ability to provide outstanding service to a wide range of customers by telephone, through written communication, and in person.
    2. Ability to work with diverse populations.
    3. Ability to learn library operations and procedures, including computer procedures.
    4. Demonstrated skill at organizing multiple projects and simultaneous deadlines with minimal, if any, supervision.
    5. Demonstrated ability to work productively and cooperatively with Outreach and Library staff.
    6. Demonstrated flexibility which includes willingness to readily respond to changing circumstances and expectations.
    7. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to develop and grow new library services.
    8. Communicates effectively orally and in writing.
    9. Ability to apply creative problem-solving skills.
    10. Ability to work outside for an extended period during outreach events.
    11. Must have intermediate computer skills, with experience working with Microsoft Office Suite, databases, email, word processing, and circulation expertise.
    12. Obtain a Missouri Class E License or equivalent and ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License.
    13. Acceptable driving record and willingness to drive Library Fleet Vehicles.
    14. Must be able to regularly lift up to 35 pounds.
    15. Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration may be given to individuals that are fluent in any non-English languages spoken in the Kansas City area including Somali, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, French, Dari, Pashto, and Vietnamese.  

    Required Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent work experience.

    Work Environment

    Work is performed at the Library’s Truman Road Facility throughout the district. Primary workspace is shared with co-workers in a warehouse/garage/office environment, other work will be performed in public and community spaces amongst patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
