YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARY CLERK
Position Summary:Performs routine library work involving a variety of clerical and other library activities and operations, primarily in the Youth Services department. Provides assistance to library patrons and participates in special events as required.
Reports to: Youth Services Librarian, directly or through LIC (Librarian in Charge)
Supervises: No supervisory responsibility
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
An employee in this position is required to perform the following essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation. These examples are not an exhaustive list of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.
1. Provides basic assistance to library patrons and works regularly scheduled shifts at the public service desks. Locates books and materials or directs patrons to requested books and other materials throughout the library.
2. Assists with circulation tasks. Utilizes online computer system to charge and discharge books and other materials, register patrons, and manage patron accounts.
3. Receives payments for fines and services.
4. Provides direct public assistance to library patrons.
5. Assists with general opening and closing duties.
6. Receives and directs phone calls and other patron questions. Provides information as requested, referring complex issues to the appropriate supervisor according to established protocol.
7. Assists patrons in use of internet, electronic resources, word processing and other software, online catalog, photocopier, eReaders and other library equipment.
8. Assists with the maintenance of shelves, materials and facilities. Shelves books and other library materials, clears tables, straightens chairs, and maintains orderly service desk and work areas.
9. Assists with enforcement of library policies and in maintaining appropriate behavior in the library.
10. May assist with the technical and physical processing of new materials and the handling of outdated or damaged materials.
11. Assists Youth Services department staff with preparation and implementation of outreach events and programs for children and teens, including regular storytimes, the annual Summer Reading Challenge, and passive programming.
12. Performs clerical support duties such as processing mailings, copying, filing and word processing.
13. Keeps current and knowledgeable of technology and its uses in the library environment.
14. Performs other duties as required.
