Library Services Director

  • The Glen Ellyn Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic and service-oriented professional to lead our Library Services team as the Director of Library Services. The Library Services Director is responsible for supervising the provision of lending services for the Library, the support services related to this function, and for primary assistance in the provision of these services. The Library Services Director is also responsible for associated administrative activities and for representing the department in library-wide decision-making. The Library Services Director may supervise the operation of the entire Library in the absence of the Library Director and will be responsible for additional designated services as assigned.


    Primary responsibilities:  

    • Carries out administrative duties in support of the department, which include:
      • Hiring, training, supervising and evaluating departmental staff
      • Developing and administering departmental budget and strategic plan 
    • Oversees and provides services directly to the public, which include:
      • Problem solving issues with the public or with library items
      • Issuing and renewing library cards
      • Answering and/or redirecting inquiries in person and over the phone, via email and chat
      • Hold shelf maintenance
      • Receiving and recording fines and fees associated with departmental transactions from all stakeholder libraries and groups
    • Oversees and provides support activities to the department, which include:
      • Generating and maintaining manuals, policies and procedures
      • Resolving item and reciprocal borrower issues 
      • Ordering and tracking departmental supplies
    • Carries out other duties in support of the department and the Library which include:
      • Attending, participating and presenting in staff meetings and staff committees, Library Board meetings, department head meetings
      • Serving as Library representative to SWAN, RAILS and other interested groups, committees, and task forces primarily pertaining to functions associated with Library Services functions 
      • Gathers and presents statistics for month end, year end, and board reports, IPLAR and ILLINET

    Qualifications and Experience  

    • ALA accredited Masters Degree in Library Science or its demonstrated equivalent
    • Five years successful professional work experience providing library services in a public contact positions, preferably within a public library
    • Two years successful work supervisory experience
