  • The Cosumnes Community Services District is seeking qualified individuals for the position of Lifeguards in our Aquatics Division. These positions will fill  seasonal vacancies at the Elk Grove Aquatics Center, Barbara Wackford Community and Aquatics Complex and Jerry Fox Swim Center.

    Under close supervision, the Lifeguard maintains constant watch over a public swimming pool facility to enforce regulations and prevent accidents, assists swimmers in distress, and provides emergency and routine first aid.  Performs basic facility maintenance duties and teaches swim lessons to a variety of skill and age levels.

    The season is anticipated to begin April 8, 2025 and run through October 7, 2025.  Actual hours assigned may be increased or decreased at anytime depending upon the needs of the program or department.

    Salary Information
    The salary range for the Lifeguard classification is between $16.00 - $17.50 per hour. The District typically appoints new employees at step 1 of the salary range. Consideration for an appointment higher than step 1 will be based on experience, education, or the need for unique skills or knowledge and shall be no more than the mid-point of the salary range.

    The following duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of a specific statement on duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed. Employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level as required.
     
    • Maintains constant watch over patrons in assigned areas and assists patrons in distress;
    • Enforces rules and regulations of programs and facilities as mandated by CSD policies including in and around the pool, deck, locker rooms and turf areas;
    • Performs emergency procedures when needed; administers first aid as necessary;
    • Provides a safe and clean environment with adequate supervision by implementing guidelines from CSD and Department policies and procedures manuals;
    • Provides courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, CSD personnel and the public;
    • Arrives on time and in proper attire/appearance as required by CSD guidelines;
    • Accountable for all program participants during program hours;
    • Monitors behavior of participants;
    • Conducts set up and clean up of facility and equipment;
    • Attends, and participates at staff meetings and trainings including monthly in-service trainings, planned and random skills tests and in-pool assessments;
    • Reports any potentially unsafe conditions to the Lead Lifeguard or Manager on duty;
    • Completes appropriate reports and forms as necessary;
    • Performs general maintenance, including removing trash from the swimming pool, deck, locker rooms, floors, walls, storage, office, and other areas of the facility;
    • Conducts work tasks safely and in compliance with Department safety standards and the CSD Injury and Illness Prevention Program;
    • Teaches swim lessons to a variety of skill and age levels; evaluates participants and teaches according to program outlines, descriptions and goals;
    • Provides positive and continual feedback to swim lesson participants regarding progress;
    • Required to work shifts, weekends, and holidays;
    • May communicate with parents, participants and the public; refers program concerns and participation issues to lead level worker;
    • May recommend maintenance and improvements essential to the cleanliness of pool, deck areas, and locker rooms.
    Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
     
    Education and Training: 

    Certification must be obtained by 05/18/2025 and maintained throughout employment as a condition of employment.
    • Lifeguard: Possession of an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training Certification;
    • Water Safety Instructor (optional): Possession of an American Red Cross (ARC) Water Safety Instructor Certification.
    • For those applicants who successfully pass the in-water assessment that DO NOT hold a current Lifeguard Certification, will have the option to take a free class through CSD Lifeguarding Certification Course;

    • Lifeguard class #1 Saturdays and Sundays  2/1-2/9  8 am - 5:30 pm
    • Lifeguard class #2 Saturdays and Sundays  3/1-3/9  8 am - 5:30 pm
    • Lifeguard class #3 Mon - Thurs  3/17-3/20  8 am - 5:30 pm
    • Lifeguard class #4 Saturdays and Sundays 4/5-4/13  8 am - 5:30 pm
    • Lifeguard class #5 Saturdays and Sundays  4/19-4/27  8 am - 5:30 pm
    • Lifeguard class #6 Saturdays and Sundays  5/10-5/18  8 am - 5:30 pm
    Experience:
    • None required. 
    • Must be 15 years of age or older and ability to obtain and retain a Work Permit throughout employment, if under the age of 18;
    Knowledge of:
    • Current methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in implementing and performing a variety of aquatic activities including lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons and working with children and adults of various ages and abilities in aquatic settings;
    • Basic principles of customer service;
    • Basic operation of equipment and office machines including pool vacuum, pool cover, heating and air conditioning unit, intrusion alarm, calculator, computer, keyboard, printers and other peripherals, copier, and fax machine;
    • Current methods and techniques used in preparing reports and forms, using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style;
    • Basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculation of decimals, ratios, percentages and fractions.

    Ability to:
    • Effectively and tactfully communicate both orally and in writing with program participants, user groups, CSD personnel and the public;
    • Comprehend, utilize, and interpret a variety of reference books and manuals including personnel handbook, policy manual, and American Red Cross text books, safety manual including technical medical terminology;
    • Comprehend and prepare reports and forms such as accident and incident reports, inventory lists; emergency, registration, and Hold Harmless forms; When to Work schedules, and calendars using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style.
    • Analyze and use independent judgment in problem solving fairly routine situations such as responding to customer or employee problems/complaints, supervising pool patron activities and events, caring for pool patrons with injuries and resolving conflicts between participants to ensure safety.

    Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
    • Mobility: frequent sitting or standing for long periods of time; continuous swimming including a timed 500 yard swim, treading water for at least two (2) minutes, and retrieving an object from water depths up to thirteen (13) feet; occasional walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crawling and twisting, while performing work; frequent pushing, pulling or lifting objects up to fifty (50) pounds or more such as moving an injured person on a backboard; frequent use of keyboard;
    • Vision: constant use of overall vision; occasional computer use; occasional color and depth vision;
    • Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; occasional writing and typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching; frequent operation of office equipment, recreation and lifesaving related tools such as, but not limited to, scissors, plunger, mop, rescue tube and first aid/CPR/AED supplies;
    • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person and on the phone;
    • Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision making and concentration, ability to remain calm in emergency situations; frequent public and/or coworker contact.

    Typical Working Conditions 
    Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment in various types of weather. Occasional work is performed indoors. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold. Basic cleaning of facilities may include exposure to cleaning agents.Application Review (Pass/Fail): All applicants must complete and submit an application by the final filing deadline. Applications will be reviewed for possession of minimum qualifications and evaluated according to the essential functions of the job and other needs of the position.

    • Supplemental Questions: The supplemental questions are considered a part of the application process. All required questions must be completed before the application can be submitted. The supplemental questions will be used to evaluate the relevance, level, and progression of the applicant's education, training, and experience. Depending on the size of the applicant pool, the supplemental questions may be used as a part of the supplemental screening.
    • Supplemental Screening:  The district will review the responses to the supplemental questions of all applicants meeting the minimum qualifications. The most competitive candidates in the applicant pool will be selected to continue in the selection process.
    Group Assessment Center- The most qualified candidates from the review will be invited to a group assessment center. The group assessment may include interview questions, activities and/or presentations.
                                                                                      
    Conditional Offer Procedures - Candidates selected from the assessment will receive a conditional offer of employment contingent upon the successful completion of the following:
    • Background Check: A State of California, Department of Justice criminal background check.
    • Medical Clearance: A clear tuberculosis screening and a clear drug screening will be required.
    • Work Eligibility: The District participates in E-Verify to confirm authorization to work in the US. 
    Please Note: Part-time employment with the District is on an "at-will" basis meaning the District or the employee may terminate employment at any time with or without cause.
