Lineman constructs, maintains, and repairs overhead and underground transmission lines. Performs site preparation tasks, including digging holes or trenches, installing anchors, climbing poles, and using equipment like digger derricks, aerial lifts, pulling and tensioning equipment, forklifts, and dump trucks. Being a Lineman installs wire and cable. Follows all safety regulations and procedures. Additionally, Lineman work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a valid Driver's License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Lineman works under moderate supervision. Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in electrical distribution and sub-transmission system maintenance work.
Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to operate, perform routine maintenance, and clean electrical equipment, machinery and tools used in electric line work.
Ability to follow proper methods, procedures and safety precautions of line work.
Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
Ability to work in varying weather conditions.
Ability to provide assistance during electrical outages, work to correct outage problems and restore electric power, remain available to perform all types of work during emergency operations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors and the public by displaying honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior; ability to read and understand staking sheets or working diagrams; ability to climb and work on utility poles with tools and safety belt using lineman hooks.
Ability to perform heavy manual work.
Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable. This position requires on-call shifts.
