  • Position Overview

    The Loss Control Field Representative provides safety guidance and support to all FMIC Policyholders within his or her assigned territory to reduce operating risk overall, underpin safety performance improvement, and ensure compliance with the Mutual's policies. The Loss Control Field Representative is the main point of contact for FMIC Policyholders within the assigned territory. As such, the Field Representative must promote a positive attitude of safety to all policyholders and be willing to support the policyholder in a manner that brings value to the policyholder as a customer of FMIC. The Loss Control Field Representative is responsible for meeting or exceeding the Loss Ratio expectation for his/her territory as determined by FMIC's Board of Directors.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    • Develops and implements tactical (action) plans to control and reduce losses in his/her assigned territory.
    • Enforces adherence to FMIC Loss Control policies and procedures among the assigned area policyholders.
    • Conducts Pre-Surveys for potential new policyholders within 30 days of notice. Evaluates potential policyholder for risk and safety culture/compliance and provides a recommendation to the FMIC Underwriter to approve or deny the new policy request.
    • Conducts new account set-up within 30 days of Policy Inception for new policyholders in the territory. New account set-up includes a documented review of FMIC's Policyholder Manual, development or approval of the policyholder's Safety Rules, and a documented review of FMIC's Safety Requirements, including any applicable Zero Tolerance Policies.
    • Submits a new member letter to the Director of Loss Control after each new account set-up that details the characteristics of the new policyholder's operation.
    • Conducts, at a minimum, annual Safety Surveys with each policyholder to ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures.
    • Assists policyholders as needed with developing and implementing specific safety improvement actions
    • Conducts on-site and/or classroom training on specific safety topics, such as Driver Safety, as directed by the Director of Loss Control
    • Assists partners and associations with training as needed (such as Pro-Logger, SHARP, Master Logger, etc.)
    • Conducts and documents an annual Safety Meeting while performing a Safety Survey with each policyholder
    • Conducts a documented reminder with each policyholder on an annual basis of FMIC's requirement to report all claims within 24 hours
    • Conducts a documented reminder with each policyholder on an annual basis of FMIC's requirement for Alcohol and Drug Testing at the time of injury
    • Annually reviews and documents requirements related to subcontractors with each policyholder
    • Annually reviews and documents FMIC's Zero Tolerance policies specific to each policyholder's business activity (logging, woodworking, manufacturing, etc.)
    • Conducts follow-up Safety Surveys with policyholders that have experienced high losses or an excessive number of claims as determined by the Director of Loss Control. During these visits, the Field Representative will review the current Loss Ratio for the policyholder as well as review all previous claims. The Field Representative will also review the potential next action or consequence with the policyholder should additional claims occur.
    • Maintains a Safety Equipment inventory in his/her vehicle and makes it available for sale to support the policyholder
    • On a quarterly basis, reconciles the Equipment Inventory and reports results to the assigned coordinator
    • Maintains an Account Database containing key information for each policyholder, including, but not limited to, address and contact information, dates of annual surveys and visits, number of employees, types of operations (logging, trucking, manufacturing, etc.), and safety ratings.
    • Evaluates each policyholder for chainsaw usage and maintains a database for all policyholders categorizing level of chainsaw use. Reports any chainsaw training needs to the Chainsaw Trainer and updates the database with training dates.
    • Conducts investigations and provides detailed written documentation for potential legal use of all major claims as determined by the Director of Loss Control
    • Assists the policyholder with OSHA compliance. Reviews various OSHA requirements and assists with training requirements as outlined in the appropriate checklist book.
    • On occasion, may be requested by a policyholder to perform a Mock OSHA Inspection to assist the policyholder with compliance with OSHA Standards.
    • Assists the policyholder with developing required Safety Rules and provides a copy of the completed rules to the appropriate government agency. Tracks the date of submission in the Account Database.
    • Conducts annual payroll or tonnage audits to reconcile each policyholder's account within 90 days of policy expiration or anniversary. Determines the cause of any significant discrepancies between reported and actual payroll or tonnage.
    • On occasion, will assist in training new Loss Control staff in the functions, duties, and requirements of loss control activities as related to their job responsibilities.
    • As necessary, acts as liaison with the policyholder for any questions or needs the policyholder may have, such as billing questions, insurance questions, etc. Ensures the policyholder is connected with the subject matter expert at FMIC.
    • Attends sales events or industry-associated conventions as needed as a representative of Forestry Mutual Insurance Company.
    • Looks for business development opportunities while conducting daily activities. Submits any potential new business opportunities to the designated contact at FMIC.
    • On occasion, may be expected to contribute to FMIC newsletters or other forms of media. This may include writing a safety message or article or highlighting the safety contributions of a policyholder in the territory as requested by the Director of Loss Control.
    • Maintains a database of all claims in the territory and submits the database timely each month to the Director of Loss Control
    • Analyzes and approves or denies annual renewals for policyholders within the territory
    • Dependent upon the workload of the assigned territory, the Loss Control Field Representative may be expected to assist or manage other accessorial duties related to Loss Control. Duties may include but are not limited to developing quarterly claims reviews and related information requested by the Director of Loss Control, Safety Equipment Coordinator for Loss Control, CPR Trainer, Chainsaw Trainer, Training Video Committee Member, etc.
    • Attends the Review Committee meeting of any member who violates the Mutual's procedures related to procedural compliance and/or losses.
    • Reviews all new First Report of Injury submissions for the territory. Follows up with the affected policyholder and provides information/feedback to the Director of Loss Control regarding the injury or claim
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Additional Duties and Responsibilities

    • Provide Loss Control support in other geographical territories as requested by the Director of Loss Control.

    Education/Experience
    Advanced degree in related field preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered for candidates without an advanced degree. Strong analytical, communication, and decision-making skills

    Basic computer skills are needed to perform this position, including:

    • Ability to navigate Forestry Mutual's software applications that are pertinent to this position.
