WHAT THIS ROLE WILL DO
Performs any combination of tasks associated with the Machine Operator classifications to assist in machine shop activities. Sets up and operates machine tools and fits and assembles parts to make or repair moderately complex metal parts requiring only normal tolerances, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, material properties, and layout and machining procedures; performs other duties as required and/or directed by supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS ROLE
● Studies specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of piece to be machined, sequence of operations, and tools, materials, and machines required.
● Sets up and operates metal-removing machines, such as lathe, milling machine, shaper, planer, or grinder, to machine parts to specifications. May utilize CNC or manual machine.
● Verifies conformance of work piece to specification, using measuring instruments.
● Positions and secures work piece in holding devise, such as chuck or collet, or on surface plate or worktable with such devices as vises, V-blocks, and angle plates, and uses hand tools, such as files, scrapers, wrenches, and power tools to fit and assemble parts to assemblies or mechanisms.
● Develops shape for, sharpens and forms special or unusual cutting tools using grinding equipment.
● Lubricates and performs routine adjustment on shop machine tools and equipment as needed or specified.
● Selects, assembles, measures, and installs cutting tools into machine spindles or magazine.
● Sharpens and forms simple cutting tools using pedestal grinder.
● Must be able to read and interpret blueprint drawings in both English Imperial and Metric Systems.
● Other duties as assigned.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS OF THIS ROLE
● May operate at close tolerances.
● May machine highly complex parts.
● May perform flame cutting and arc or gas welding operations, when required.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
● High School Diploma or GED
