Machinist assembles, repairs, and fabricates parts or components for tools or machines by operating mechanical equipment. Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine the precise specifications, dimensions, and tolerance levels of the finished product. Being a Machinist selects and operates the appropriate tools to cut, shape, or finish metal, plastic, or composite material. Sets up, services, and maintains equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation. Additionally, Machinist utilizes precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy and quality of machined parts. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units as necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Machinist works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Job Description: DESCRIPTION: The Machinist A performs set ups, operates manual and CNC mills, lathes, and other machine shop equipment to produce parts according to specifications and may build set up fixtures as needed. Will operate manual and CNC equipment, writing new programs and editing existing programs. Encourages others to discover, develop and apply their talents enabling them to reach their full potential. This role actively engages in our Lean journey by building and acting on continuous improvement and development opportunities. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Set up and operate various types of machines and finishing equipment (lathes, mills, drills; CNC & Manual, grinders) without assistance and maintain proper tolerances Ability to verify and inspect own work - experience in using micrometers, plug gages, height gage, and surface plates, etc. for layout of machined parts Troubleshoot programs at the machine and fix errors Perform visual and physical inspection of parts using functional measuring equipment Edit CNC programs and adjust to ensure acceptable parts. May be required to write own programs and operate multiple machines Maintain high housekeeping standards to ensure safe and efficient work areas, including cleaning chips from around machine and keeping coolant/machine fluids off shop floor and maintaining organization of work area to established standards Problem solve and identify the most efficient way to complete tasks Commitment to excellent safety habits MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: High school Diploma/GED 3 years or more machining experience in a job shop environment Demonstrated work experience in reading and interpreting blueprints At least 3 years experience running manual mills and lathes Ability to edit CNC programs Math skills - ability to understand and check dimensions and convert from standard to metric measurements Demonstrates basic computer literacy with common computer programs such as MS-Word, MS-Excel, and MS-Outlook PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS An Associate’s Degree in Machine Tool Technology or related field Experience writing CNC programs Experience with running and editing programs on Okuma VMC a plus OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Physical requirements include the ability to lift 50 lbs., and ability to stand for long durations Must be willing and able to work overtime as the workload requires At Barry-Wehmiller we recognize that people come with a wealth of experience and talent beyond just the technical requirements of a job.
