Being a Machinist selects and operates the appropriate tools to cut, shape, or finish metal, plastic, or composite material. Sets up, services, and maintains equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation. Additionally, Machinist utilizes precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy and quality of machined parts. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units as necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Machinist works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. MAJOR JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (List in order of importance)
Ensures operation of machinery and mechanical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements on engines, motors, pneumatic equipment, conveyor systems, and production machines; following diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications; troubleshooting malfunctions.
Maintains equipment, parts, and supplies inventories by checking stock to determine inventory level.
Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
Maintains accurate history logs for all machines for use in identifying and diagnosing problems
Assist in troubleshooting, repairs and maintains electrical and electronic circuitry; hydraulic systems, plumbing, valving, filters, tanks, pumps, etc.
Repairs, maintains and facility equipment.
Strives to improve machine performance, and to minimize downtime through prior planning and quick thorough machine repairs.
Provides mechanical support for production personnel.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Training, Experience and Certifications)
Minimum High School diploma; higher continuing education in related area considered a plus.
Minimum of 1 to 2 years of maintenance , mechanical or electrical experience in a industrial or educational setting
Thorough understanding of maintenance, reliability, Mechanical Integrity and Quality Assurance, and Process Safety Management best practices, preferred
Experience working in an ISO Certified, FDA Regulated, or cGMP environment preferred
Preferred industry experience with machine set-up fundamentals and solid troubleshooting skills
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Those necessary to perform the job competently)
Good written and oral communication skills
Equipment/facility maintenance, technical understanding, basic safety, and power tools knowledge
Strong attention to detail
Flexible and self-motivated
Knowledge of process piping, auto valves, exhaust/dust collection systems, and screw/belt conveyors
Must be able to work on gearboxes, agitators, and pumps
Ability to repair electrical/mechanical machinery throughout the plant; necessary skills include: electrical, pneumatics, PLC logic, welding
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT (Under Typical Positions)
Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, dust or gases. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Required to stand and walk for a large part of the working day. Physical requirements include talking, hearing, bending/stooping, squatting, reaching above shoulder height, crouching, kneeling, balancing and pushing/pulling. Also requires some lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Use of both hands for repetitive actions such as grasping and manipulating. Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
