Machinist assembles, repairs, and fabricates parts or components for tools or machines by operating mechanical equipment. Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine the precise specifications, dimensions, and tolerance levels of the finished product. Being a Machinist selects and operates the appropriate tools to cut, shape, or finish metal, plastic, or composite material. Sets up, services, and maintains equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation. Additionally, Machinist utilizes precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy and quality of machined parts. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units as necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Machinist works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. JOB SUMMARY:
Initially operate manual machines such as: LeBlond lathe, Bridgeport Mill, and drill press to fabricate parts. Load part in machine, cycle machine, detects malfunctions in machine operations such as work or damaged cutting tools. As apprenticeship progresses individuals will be trained to operate/program CNC production machines. Run production lots, communicate with co-workers regarding production runs, and maintains safe, organized and clean work environment. Programs, edits programs, downloads programs, performs set up functions, checks tooling, performs quality checks, and reads load sheets according to production needs.
APPRENTICESHIP (General):
This is a four-year apprenticeship program. (Previous work experience, MCTC credit, and/or college credit may qualify to be applied to the first 2 years of this program). Apprenticeship compensation is based on a percentage of entry wage. Entry level compensation is dependent on education/experience coming into the program. Compensation will increase as the Apprentice progresses through the program, culminating in normal wage at the end of the program. This position requires earning 12 credit hours per year in the appropriate program at MCTC, MSU, NKU, etc. Books and tuition for this class work are company funded, provided minimum academic requirements are met.
