Major Gifts Officer

  • Reporting to the Director of Development, the Major Gifts Officer is responsible for securing leadership annual gifts, cultivating new major gift prospects, and expanding the museum's individual giving programs. This role builds relationships across channels to drive fundraising outcomes through data-driven moves management.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Major Gift Development

    • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors and prospects capable of gifts of $10,000
    • Develop customized engagement and solicitation strategies tailored to prospect interests.
    • Staff work of affinity groups and lead volunteer fundraisers.
    • Maintain pipeline of 150 viable major gift prospects with capacity of $25K

    Annual Giving

    • Secure annual leadership gifts of $5,000 for general operating support
    • Collaborate on comprehensive annual fund strategy including mail appeals, events, and specialized groups.
    • Analyze program metrics and recommend changes to increase retention, upgrade gifts, and acquire first-time donors.

    Membership Program

    • Oversee membership program including stewardship, renewals, new acquisitions, and increased annual fund gifts from members.
    • Evaluate and enhance member benefits, services, and policies to drive engagement.

    Administration

    • Maintain constituent records in Altru database.
    • Prepare progress reports, analyses, and budget recommendations.
    • Participate in community groups to increase museum’s visibility.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • 5 years frontline fundraising experience with proven major gift results
    • Strong relationship building and communication/presentation abilities.
    • Organized, detail-oriented, ethical.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

    • Proven solicitation experience through:
    • Carefully managing marketing and other museum resources
    • Managing, deepening, and growing relationships
    • Assessing larger market trends and developing effective growth strategies to align the museum to those trends.
    • Being cognizant of various industry sectors and being able to transcend them as needed to effectively meet fundraising goals.
    • Being entrepreneurial, analytical, strategic, and innovative
    • Operating effectively in a complex field with a high degree of personal discipline and motivation
    • Having highly effective written and verbal communication skills
    • Effectively organizing and leading a diverse set of donors and volunteers
    • Follows, supports, and clearly communicates the mission, vision, strategic goals, and policies and procedures of NMAAM to serve both internal and external customers.
    • Conducts self in a professional manner; maintains appropriate professional appearance.
    • High level of integrity needed to safeguard confidential information.
    • Well-developed customer service orientation
    • Excellent attention to details, organizational skills, ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
    • Knowledge of the following preferred: Blackbaud fundraising platform, electronic communications media, and all aspects of Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)

    All Staff Duties:

    • Serves as leader to assure strong communications between NMAAM and all external constituents.
    • Actively seeks to learn the history of NMAAM.
    • Supports and promotes the museum’s mission.
    • Assist in the planning and implementation of special events.
    • Attend staff meetings.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
