Major Gifts Manager manages and implements a philanthropic gift program to nurture and solicit relationships with corporate, institutional, and major donors. Develops a portfolio of existing and potential donors and a strategy to enhance and extend relationships to generate philanthropic revenue. Being a Major Gifts Manager organizes events and meetings with prospects to raise awareness of the organization's mission and highlight accomplishments and ongoing funding needs. Makes regular personal contact with key contributors to strengthen relations with the organization. Additionally, Major Gifts Manager oversees proposal preparation and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Major Gifts Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Major Gifts Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.   • The American Battlefield Trust is the only national non-profit organization dedicated to preserving our nation’s battlefields from the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. We are seeking a Major Gifts Officer to cultivate and solicit our fantastic donors so that we can save these battlefields before they are developed, and educate the public about what happened on those historic fields.

    America will soon be celebrating our 250th birthday in just a few short years, and at the same time increasing development pressures are threatening our country’s battlefields like never before. Now is the time to save this land before it is too late, which is why the American Battlefield Trust is launching a major capital campaign.

    Through the campaign we will be saving thousands of acres of battlefield land from places like Gettysburg, Lexington and Concord, and Antietam. We will bring the battlefields to life through cutting-edge interpretation, and we will also support teachers and students through field trips and teacher resources.

    Salary Range: $95,000 - $120,000 annually

    Position Summary

    The Major Gifts Officer will build relationships with our donors, learning about their passions and interests. They will then invite donors in their portfolio to participate in the upcoming capital campaign by supporting projects and programs in line with their interests.

    Principal Responsibilities:

    The Major Gifts Officer will

    • Manage a portfolio of 150 donors and qualified prospects from across the country through quality, substantive contacts and face-to-face visits to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors to successfully close gifts ranging from $25,000 to $500,000 ;
    • 50% of time will be spent traveling to conduct in person visits to build, cultivate and steward major donor relationships;
    • Work with the Director of Development and key stakeholders to meet or exceed dollar and visit goals, with a focus on securing new multi-year gifts in support of a major capital campaign;
    • Develop, execute, evaluate, and refine strategies to connect donors with the organization’s priority projects;
    • Collaborate with the Major Gifts Team to engage donors and prospects, to include participation in special events and other engagement opportunities.
    • Serve as an ambassador for the American Battlefield Trust by developing and maintaining a thorough and accurate understanding of its mission, strategic plan, key programs, and funding priorities to effectively connect donors and prospects to its priorities and core services;
    • Effectively communicate the organization’s priorities (initially in support of the capital campaign) and successfully match donors' philanthropic interests to funding needs;
    • Contribute to and review written materials, including individual donor strategies, briefings, solicitations, and acknowledgements in a quality consistent with the American Battlefield Trust’s development standards; and
    • Utilize and update the American Battlefield Trust’s donor CRM, EveryAction by recording activities, contacts, gift proposals, and strategies on an on-going basis consistent with current policies.

    Required Competencies and Qualifications:

    The American Battlefield Trust seeks a Major Gifts Officer with:

    • A commitment to the mission of American Battlefield Trust to preserve our nation’s hallowed battlegrounds and educate the public about what happened there and why it matters today.
    • Experience in donor and prospect management and gift solicitation, including a proven track record of closing major gifts and stewarding donor relationships, experience securing gifts as part of a capital campaign is preferred but not required.
    • A high level of accountability, self-motivation, and ability to work independently and with confidentiality;
    • Strong communication skills and ability to write effectively;
    • A keen attention to detail and an ability to maintain high standards;
    • A professional demeanor and good judgment when interacting with the American Battlefield Trust’s staff and leadership team, high net worth prospective donors, and key stakeholders; and
    • Competency with Microsoft Office. Proficiency with CRM databases required, and experience with EveryAction is preferred.

    A bachelor's degree is required for this position as is at least five years of major gift fundraising or sales experience.
