The mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is to provide diverse open space, park, beach and community forest resources; and to enrich people's lives through a broad array of recreation and community services. The Department manages 1,810 acres of parkland encompassing 60 developed and open space parks, beaches, recreation and sports facilities, as well as the City's urban forest, and parkways and medians program. THE POSITION
The City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a motivated and knowledgeable Project Planner to join the Department’s dynamic interdisciplinary parks and recreation staff team. The position duties include park and recreation facility master planning, policy development and implementation, scoping, design and permitting for park and facility renovation and development projects, and community outreach and engagement.
The Project Planner prepares requests for proposals for planning and park design consultants, completes development applications and submittals for design review and permitting, and assists City teams as needed during project construction. Additional duties include the preparation and maintenance of project work plans, timelines and budgets, coordination with technical consultants, landscape maintenance contractors, and monitoring contract compliance including project schedules, deliverables and invoices.
The position develops grant applications, prepares grant status reports and ensures projects are consistent with grant guidelines and requirements. Working collaboratively with departmental staff teams, conducts community meetings and implements project outreach programs. Prepares written staff reports and other correspondence. Makes public presentations to City Boards and Commissions. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background and/or demonstrated interest in land development, municipal policy, park planning, and in working on teams that include consultants, engineers, design professionals, and City staff members from various departments and divisions to review and implement projects.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Four (4) to five (5) years of increasingly responsible urban planning experience including one year of project management responsibility.
Education and/or Training:
Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, geography, public administration, business administration or a related field.
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
