Overview As the subject matter experts at Electric Boat for welding and brazing, welding engineering services is involved in all aspects of submarine design and construction.
Design Support: The candidate's responsibilities will include participating in multi-discipline design-build teams to develop designs that are sound from a materials and weld-ability perspective and are cost-effective to produce.
As a member of the team you will:
- Support Engineering and Design in the development of new concepts and the development of associated drawings/disclosures by reviewing structural, mechanical, and piping drawings/disclosures for overall productability (welding and non-destructive testing (NDT) process accessibility/availability, use of weldable and inspect-able materials, use of correct welding notes and graphics, and identification of appropriate non-destructive testing) as well as compliance with fabrication specifications
- Provide technical guidance and expertise on welding related issues to multifaceted teams involving structures, components, and piping/mechanical systems.
- Interpret fabrication, welding, non-destructive testing, and consumable specifications, both military and commercial as required
- Develop and maintain company standards, procedures, and best practices in the areas of welding
- As a member of the design-build teams the candidate will interface with Electric Boat Engineering (Naval Architecture, Mechanical systems and components, as well as Nuclear structures/systems directorates), Design, Operations, Information Technology departments, as well as SUPSHIP Groton and NAVSEA as required.
- May provide technical guidance and expertise for new construction and overhaul activities taking place at various Electric Boat locations

- Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to investigate problems by effectively asking questions, extracting necessary data from available sources, and working with others to determine root causes and implement appropriate solutions
- Ability to understand basic principles of welding metallurgy and use this to explain/understand weld metal mechanical properties performance, issues with cracking, and other material related problems and issues
Qualifications Required: - Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering
- Internal candidate(s) must be from organizations outside of operations (Casciano/Gabriel)
Preferred: - Bachelor of Science Degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy Engineering, or Material Engineering (focus on metals as opposed to non-metallics), Civil/Structural Engineering, Industrial Engineering
- Less than 15 years of relevant experience
- Experience in an engineering/design, industrial, shipbuilding, or other heavy fabrication environment
- Familiarity or experience with basic arc welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, SAW, etc.)
- Engineering experience in the design or support of structural/piping applications with the ability to read and understand blueprints/drawing
- Familiarity with Military, ASME, and AWS welding specifications
