Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.   • SUMMARY: Under general supervision, interprets either over the phone or in person for medical staff and or dental staff for limited English proficiently patients and their families requiring language assistance. Accurately interprets both the content and the spirit of the communication without adding, omitting, editing, or changing the information. Interpreters will seek clarification as needed.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Interpret between source and target language (Spanish) for clinics and medical facilities.

    2. Ability to work in a variety of medical specialties with knowledge of specialized medical terminology.

    3. Ability to work in a dental setting with knowledge of dental terminology

    4. Follow policies & procedures including the ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of information.

    5. Assists with patient follow-up as necessary, to include contacting patients with appointment reminders.

    6. Assists with translating patient education information as specifically requested.

    7. Establishes and maintains quality service and positive interaction with all patients, customers, visitors, health care providers, and clinical employees.

    8. Maintain professionalism through appearance, attitude, and posture.

    9. Work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

    10. Other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    - High School or GED Diploma required.

    - 1 year of interpreting experience in a medical/clinical setting, preferred.

    - National Certification (NBCMI or CCHI) required within six months of hire.

    - Documented fluency in English and target language (Spanish).

    - Experience with medical and dental terminology in English and target language (Spanish).

    - Advanced communication and interpersonal skills.

    - Critical thinking skills and a “teamwork mind-set”.

    - Excellent Customer Service to recipients of all cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

    - Proven understanding and acceptance of the NCIHC Interpreter Code of Ethics and NCIHC Standards of Practice.
