JOB SUMMARY: The medical director of trauma services will be responsible for the overall management and the organization for the trauma program. He/she will support the philosophy of the hospital maintaining the dignity of the individual (patient/family nit), enhancing the quality of human life and providing optimal trauma care to all injured patients.
The trauma director for Limestone Medical Center leads the multidisciplinary activities of the trauma program. The director must be a board certified physician with special interest in trauma care. The trauma director should have the authority to affect all aspects of trauma care, including (1) recommending trauma team privileges; (2) cooperating with the nurse administrator to support the nursing needs of the trauma patients; (3) developing treatment protocols; (4) coordinating the performance improvement peer review process; (5) correcting deficiencies in trauma care or excluding from trauma call those trauma team members who do not meet criteria and (6) coordinating the budgetary process for the trauma program. The trauma medical director will work with the trauma team to identify physicians with the appropriate credentials to work in a Level IV Trauma Center that is a critical access hospital.
The trauma service is an integral part of the emergency department. The medical director of the emergency department also functions as the medical director of trauma service and represents the department in all meetings. The director works closely with the administrator/chief executive officer, chief of medical staff, director of nurses, the trauma coordinator and functions as a member of the Emergency Department Committee meetings.
