Oahu Publications - MidWeek has an immediate opening for an Editor/Writer.
Overall responsibilities:
- assist in developing the overall layout and production design of a newspaper. This includes writing, gathering information and interviewing, as well as keeping apprised of development in assigned area and cultivating sources
- writer would be responsible for overseeing one of our community Voice papers as its editor, including content curation, editing and pagination
- writer may be working several stories at a time with various deadlines and in various disciplines
Key tasks and responsibilities:
- efficiently produces the pre-press elements that constitute a newspaper, including understanding all the terms used along with the computer and layout (combining graphics and text); understanding and correctly interpreting proofreader marks; ability to type with speed and accuracy; able to consistently meets all deadlines
- assists with proofreading for all of the publications we oversee: MidWeek, outer island publications, magazines, Voice papers, Dining Out, Crave, Hawaii Renovation, etc.
- produces on a regular and timely basis interesting, balanced and accurate news stories that are important to the reader
- contributes by generating ideas and suggestions for stories and projects
- generates photo and graphics ideas for majority of stories undertaken
- meets deadlines and works closely with editors to make sure writing and editing of stories goes smoothly
Skills and attributes:
- experience with Mac computers and the Adobe suite (InDesign and some Photoshop)
- good writer with strong interviewing techniques
- good sense of news and competent at finding information
- confident, organized, and not easily discouraged
- possesses strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal
- able to work at a computer station or sit for up to three hours at a time
- attendance and punctuality is as must
Experience requirements:
- 1 year experience in a journalism- or PR-related field or;
- if no work experience, must possess a degree in journalism, communications or English
