SUMMARY
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Heluna Health invites applications for a full-time Microbiologist in the CDPH Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory (VRDL). The candidate will be experienced in standard molecular and microbiological testing strategies. The candidate will work on projects relating to rickettsial and viral vaccine preventable diseases contributing to detection and surveillance for public health purposes.
The hourly range for this position is $29.00/hour to $39.00/hour depending on experience/ qualifications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Perform high complexity testing for the detection of infections in humans and ticks.
- Perform real-time PCR and Sanger sequencing procedures for Rickettsia species surveillance; RT-qPCR assays and genotyping for virologic characterization of measles, mumps, rubella, VZV, and hepatitis A viruses and Rickettsia according to established SOPs.
- Interpret and report diagnostic and reference testing results into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Prepare for and perform surge testing for state-wide outbreaks of public health concern.
- Follow safety and quality control procedures in the handling of hazardous biological and chemical materials.
- Maintain reagents, protocols, laboratory equipment in accordance with CLIA regulations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Participate in training of other technical staff, local laboratory staff, and microbiologist trainees in testing procedures.
- Prepare technical reports and collaborate in preparation of papers.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to perform:
- Sterile technique and standard safety precautions for working with potentially infectious clinical specimens
- Micromanipulations, such as pipetting small volumes and other fine measurements using laboratory equipment
- Previous experience with molecular techniques (PCR and next generation sequencing) is highly desirable
- Able to follow verbal instructions and written protocols
Education/Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, with course work in chemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology is required.
Certificates/Licenses/Clearances
- Possession of a California Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) certification or eligible for PHM training is preferred but not required.
