Project Summary- Presence of disseminated tumor cells (DTCs) following successful treatment of primary tumors poses a risk factor for metastasis which is the leading cause of cancer mortality. This is because DTCs are the source of later relapse. DTCs remain dormant for several years but eventually they reawaken and become deadly metastases. Current knowledge on mechanisms controlling the dormancy programs of DTCs and the timing for reactivation is limited. Only detailed knowledge of DTC biology will open therapeutic alternatives which will extend remission.
