Curator of Temporary Exhibits and Events

    • A bachelor’s degree is required preferably in American history and/or Art history with a concentration on Texas history or a related field.
    • At least two years curatorial experience.
    • Knowledge and/or experience relating to collections management and conservation, and artifact provenance research.
    • Demonstrated experience with exhibition development, design, and installation processes.
    • Experience in a museum’s curatorial department.
    • Exceptional written and verbal English communications skills.
    • Object-based teaching experience.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, spreadsheet software; internet software; email; and database software.
    • At least two years experience in event coordination, preferably with a non-profit, business, professional association, hotel or restaurant.
    • Warm, outgoing interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with colleagues throughout the Museum and University.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
    • A positive, achievement-oriented attitude and proactive work ethic.
    • The ability to work in a collegial, respectful work environment is mandatory

    Preferred
    • A master’s degree in American history and/or Art history with a concentration on Texas history or a related field.
    • One year experience in a museum’s curatorial department.
    • Fluency in Spanish preferred.
    • A record of research/publication preferred.

    Primary Responsibilities
    Summary
    The Museum of the Big Bend Curator of Temporary Exhibits and Events interprets and develops the Museum’s important collection of cultural, historic and natural objects, artifacts, ephemera and other materials that relate to the Big Bend area. The position helps manage its permanent exhibition, establishes a strong curatorial voice through exhibitions, programming and scholarship related to its collections and through exploring unique special exhibition, adult and student programming opportunities.
    Informs and oversees K-12 student programming offered to area schools and school districts, helps develop information and programming for the Museum’s general visitorship and tours and ensures that volunteers working as gallery guides or with school groups are trained and knowledgeable about the Museum’s subject matter.
    Provides support and help for the Events Coordinator with external clients as well as those across the University, and also helps coordinate the Museum’s own special events for exhibit openings, donors and members.
    Responsibilities
    The curator has broad responsibilities for interpreting, developing, and managing the Museum’s collections and exhibitions, including:
    • Managing rotating permanent collection displays and temporary exhibitions in dedicated galleries.
    • Conducting substantive research emphasizing the collections, or within their area of specialty.
    • Identifying and recommending objects for acquisition and/or long-term loan
    • Assisting with training of docents and University students in specific content areas and Museum practices.
    • Collaborating with the Museum educators, other Museum staff, and University faculty to engage students in curatorial and education projects and to plan a broad range of public programs.
    • Supervising the Collections Manager/Registrar and the Education Coordinator.
    • Assisting the Director in working with the Director’s Advisory Council and other donors when requested.
    • Depending on credentials, the Curator will potentially hold an affiliate faculty position in other departments or centers related to his/her discipline, and in that capacity may also be invited to sit on related academic committees.
    • Secondary lead for special event meetings with staff, renters, and vendors.
    • Assist with the Museum event rental calendar and preparation of client rental, vendor agreements, purchase orders and invoices.
    • Assist with event memos, layouts, registrations, schedules, set-up and breakdown activities for all private and Museum events.
    • This position is required to be onsite for all Museum event rentals which will include nights and weekends and possibly some holidays.
    • Additional tasks as assigned by the Events Manager.
