TITLE: Teacher for Deaf and Hard of Hearing
LOCATION: District-Wide
SUPERVISOR: Assistant Superintendent for Special Services

JOB SUMMARY: The Teacher for Deaf and Hard of Hearing evaluates students for eligibility, develops IEPs, coordinates and collaborates with general education teachers to develop appropriate educational programs in the general education classroom, provides necessary direct educational services, and schedules and supervises sign language interpreters.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Observe the general education settings of students on the caseload and collaborate with teachers to develop optimal acoustics and accommodations for the student to facilitate success.
- Provide in-service to classroom teachers and staff regarding hearing loss and amplification equipment as needed.
- Participate in collaboration meetings as established at the elementary schools or make contact with regular education teachers at the middle and high school level.
- Frequently evaluate progress by administering formal and informal tests to assess language levels, speechreading, auditory skills and any other areas as needed related to hearing loss.
- Develop goals and objectives for the IEPs of students with hearing loss
- Implement recommended curricula and instructional strategies; collaborate with special education and regular education staff.
- Provide direct service and/or monitor service to deaf and hard of hearing individuals as determined by their IEPs.
- Communicate with audiologists and medical personnel (Ear, Nose, Throat Physicians and medical audiologists) for purposes of assessment and ongoing medical care.
- Provide guidance and support to families and students working to understand and cope with hearing loss.
- Attend appropriate building, staff and other professional meetings.
- Participate in EAR (Educational and Audiological Review) team to support students with an identified hearing loss for students with IEPs, 504s, or no identified educational disability.
- Interpret evaluation/progress data for personnel and parents at conferences, annual reviews and staffings.
- Review student files and update information as appropriate.
- Maintain a schedule that is both responsible and flexible.
- Make every effort to establish and maintain a positive atmosphere in working with the district staff.
- Perform other duties as advised by Assistant Superintendent for Special Services or principal.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- Illinois Certificate for Teacher of Deaf and Hard of Hearing required, LBS1-Unlimited also preferred.
EXPERIENCE
- 2 years of classroom experience with deaf and/or hard of hearing students preferred.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent signing skills (ASL, SEE SimCom)
- Highly organized

- Excellent problem-solver
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 185 day contract (teachers’ schedule), UEA member, Salary Schedule.
EVALUATION: To be completed as per PNA by Assistant Superintendent for Special Services or Assistant Director of Special Education
START DATE: August 16, 2022
