Optician measures and fits contact lenses and eyeglass frames based on prescriptions written by ophthalmologists or optometrists. Takes precision measurements of eyes using a pupilometer and other devices to ensure proper fit of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Being an Optician assists and advises customers in selecting frames based on their prescription, lifestyle needs, and style preferences. Inspects lenses for quality, fits and adjusts eyewear, and repairs eyewear as needed. Additionally, Optician instructs customer on correct eyeglasses and contact lens care and maintenance. Berries Hearing & Optical Center is a small Maine business located in beautiful Brunswick, Maine. Berries was founded to help members of the Midcoast community improve their hearing and vision by providing the best quality eyewear, hearing aids, accessories and customer service. We are a private practice that has been locally owned and operated since 1936.
This person will serve as an ABO-certified Optician, and perform independently as an optical professional. Working with customers, fitting eyewear, managing inventory and vendors, and independently leading the optical department will be big parts of the job.

Responsibilities will vary, and the right candidate will need to be flexible, willing to adapt, and enjoy tackling an evolving variety of challenging tasks. This person will be expected to change gears quickly, be a team player, & pitch in when needed to make sure our customers’ experience is top notch…and have fun doing it!
At minimum, assigned tasks will include:
· Working with Customers: determine customer’s individual needs, manage expectations, and recommend solutions that obtain their prescription and vision goals, all within their style and budget
· Fitting Eyewear: ensure eyewear matches prescription, perform fine tuning and adjustments
· Managing Optical Vendors & Inventory: order appropriate frames and lens technology, follow up with suppliers, maintain inventory, keep up with fashion trends appropriate for Berries’ clientele
· Cross-training Coworkers: provide on-the-job training to coworkers on basic optical skills
· Front Office Support: work with customers and front office staff with both hearing and optical portions of the business, assist with scheduling, answering phones, and other administrative tasks
This person must work well with others, be a confident communicator, and interface well with customers, vendors, & other professionals. Prioritizing, multitasking, and resolving conflicts in a professional manner, both in and out of the office, will be necessary parts of the job. This person will need to be self-sufficient, organized, and have the experience to lead the optical department and deliver results.
