Utilizes a variety of sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes to research and analyze legal topics. Being a Paralegal drafts and edits legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, motions, and contracts. Conducts fact-finding, data collection, and analysis used to prepare statements and arguments. Additionally, Paralegal assists attorneys with depositions, interviews, discovery, and investigations. Manages, organizes, and archives documents with software tools and technology. Applies specialized legal terminology appropriately in documents. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically requires Paralegal Certification. Typically reports to an attorney. The Paralegal work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. To be a Paralegal typically requires 4 -7 years of related experience. Professional Paralegal opening in downtown La Crosse with Hale, Skemp, Hanson, Skemp & Sleik, the largest law firm in the area, serving clients in Western Wisconsin for over 100 years. The candidate will be responsible for assisting attorneys with civil litigation. Responsibilities include drafting and preparing motions and other legal documents, organizing case files, filing documents with the court, scheduling mediation and/or hearings, daily client contact and communicating with the courts and opposing counsel as needed. Conducting research, proofreading, answering telephones and screening potential client calls. Keeps accurate records of all communication (i.e. phone calls, emails, secure messages), expenses, case documents (such as client intake sheets, pleadings, etc.), and time entries in Smokeball. Performs other duties as assigned by partner attorneys. A bachelor's degree, associate degree or certificate program in paralegal studies preferred, but not necessary with the right candidate willing to learn.
